Well, I've been able to keep up, it just would take a couple days per upgrade so I spread out the research; I made sure to keep up decks with the energy tech. I just now blitzed weaponry so I could take down NPCs, and it's working ok for having patience to repair, it's really a secondary thing for me atm. PvP I'm only interested in to unlock missions until much later, I don't see the point in it yet. The artifact stuff I agree with, if its not one of those you just sell it; I have max planets so scanning isn't on my list just yet. I now see what you mean about 3 rank points from that one; you can put it in whatever so technically its unlimited and that's prolly why artifacts at high ranks are most popular.

hmm, only T.O. Patrol Ship and Drannik Sentry so far. They don't drop anything so I'm doing back to missions for now.
