Don't know if this has been said, but, build one. It's not really too hard.

no it's not, but it is very easy to get lost with all of the parts available to install.
no need to pick up a mother board with built in graphics if your going with a video card.
if your not going to use the full ability of a quad core, then a duel core may be more your speed.
why pay for a 500 gig hard drive if all your going to put on it is 20 to 30 gigs of stuff.
for an operating software, what works well with your software, win 7, vista, or xp pro.
do you really need 16+ gigs of memory when 4 gigs is more then what you will ever need.

Not if you are doing memory and graphics extensive things, such as Photoshop...

if you are not familiar with custom builds dont get in them...you can get it wrong... by putting some really good stuff with crap, so you end up with cool stats which dosnt really work as they should...
i would go for high memory prebuilt desktop,(make sure all parameters like speed of RAM, HDD, etc match with MoBo) 8gigs will be enough for next few years as long as you have decent quad core on your Mobo...
if you go for built than first google for best Mobo which can support 16-24gig memory and best processor support for this moment, so you can ether get best on it now or later do upgrades, same with memory, and video can be upgraded any time since its sits on slots... for 2k's you can get REALLY good machine, choosing reliable brands you can get desktop which will work for next 5-6 years without having to upgrade and feeling slow
