I'm a new player to the game ( myself < level 30 ) and I already enjoy it a lot. Even at my current rank, though, I can already see how far ahead being in a legion puts you in this game. I've leveled slowly, very slowly, racked up research... quit doing missions... I badge hunt and move up in level only when the fighting XP I earn finally pushes me there. Even at this slow rate of progression, I'm still woefully behind the majority of the players I encounter on my battle pages. I've been in legions / clans / groups in other online games... I've been in leadership positions... and my experience has told me time and again that it's all just a bunch of BS with enormous personal egos at the top. From these previous experiences I've grown to loath legion / clan wars where I've had to bully people just because they were in the 'wrong' group and I've had people do the same to me for the same reason. What starts out as enjoyable always ends up as a complicated grind...and I play games online to get away from this kind of thing.. life dishes up enough of the former as it is.
I started this game with the intent of going solo... but honestly, if I do that, what kind of gaming experience can I expect to have in spite of what I'm up against? I mean, there are legion players at my level that are already earning 40+ times the research / artifact production that I'm currently able to provide for myself. I don't stand a chance. This disparity will only grow as I go up in level.. no matter how slowly I do it. I realize the name of the game is Galaxy Legion.. that in itself is telling enough. As a solo player is it even worth it from an enjoyment and competition standpoint to play? Your thoughts?

I think you already know the answer Arc Light... going solo is just not going to be fun for you in the long term.
Not having access to base shipments, shared artifacts, shared planets, assistance with credits, planet defense and cloak bonuses, advice from more experienced players, let alone the fun being in a good legion can be, makes going solo a really bad option.
There are a lot of fun and friendly legions out there, I would definitely suggest trying some out, despite your bad experience in other games. From my experience, I haven't come across much of that kind of stuff in Galaxy Legion. To be honest, if it wasn't for the company of good legion mates, I think my GL time would be way less enjoyable.
Anyway, long story short, as you suggest belonging to a legion is pretty much essential to enjoying Galaxy Legion.

Thanks Arc Light, that's much appreciated. The Reaper is good people and will look after you at S W A R M, but you will have to make another post before you can reply to his PM... dunno why 3 is the magic number, but it is

"S W A R M" Is a very good legion to join, we're chatty, we mess around a lot, there no ego's here, lots of shared planets, and with a bunch of leaderboarders here theres always something new to learn.
alternatively there is also terranian armada which is essentially the same, however is more passively inclined. SWARM tends to like wars and such a lot more, and even though its a war and theres grudges and banter its always respectful. Terranian Armada as i said is more passive, and tries to avoid things such as wars, and just have a relaxed gameplay

You should join Galaxy Defenders. I joined when I reached level 20, and found a great bunch of people, very helpful with credits, artifacts and advice. None of the problems you mention with leadership have occurred here, we are like a family and only want to help each other. We are currently level 5 base, and should be level 6 shortly after the new year, maybe sooner. We have daily shipments of over 25K research and also have at least 1 base scanned per day. We disable level 4 and 5 bases regularly, meaning more silver badges and base raids.

I've had experiences similar to those you describe. I used to play a lot of EVE Online ( Hope to get back into it one day when I have a comp that can handle it. ) and the people there are absolutely viciously brutal. ( Still the best MMO out there in my opinion though. ) Clicky games like this I found tend to be even worse. But I have to agree with Deigobene. Deigobene wrote: From my experience, I haven't come across much of that kind of stuff in Galaxy Legion. Legions are definitely the way to go. Take your time, look at what the different legions have to offer, if you can talk to some of the players, and then choose what is best for you. If the one you join doesn't suit you in the long run, you can move to a different one. Most players are fairly good about that sort of thing.

I agree there is no way you will grow much in this game without being in a legion anymore. They give massive bonuses to resources and planet protection not to mention that many legions will help you out with planet gifts, creds, and arti's as needed. I do, however, see your point how in other games such as this that is the case. Though in this game, as its all ready been pointed out, there is not as much as that. There is some but its not nearly to the point as it is in other games simply because of all the restrictions there are in the PVP area and on how hard it is to find planets owned by the "enemy" legion. Being a long time player here I have to say that 95% of all my past time "enemy's" that I fought in this game I am now somewhat friends with. While we still fight from time to time we do so with mutual respect. One of the many reasons I love this game.
I would also like to point out that even if someone goes all out on you and tries to bully you out of the game there is really no possible way that said player can make your game exp that bad while your in a legion. But if you where solo it would be much easier for them.
Also I have a couple threads out there for new players one is linked in my sig and the other is just to let new players now that I am open to any and all questions you may have. Even if you think they are dumb I do hope you ask so you can have a better playing exp.
Hope you find a good spot to go and hope to see you make a name for your self in the game.

sound like you are a cool game player. I would suggest go around and visit several selected legions... meet new friends, at the same time you can decide which legion may fit best with your gaming style. Good luck and see you around bro!

As others have already said, take your time and find a legion that suits your mentality - not only your game play style, but your frame of mind too. I've been in some great legions, and all are generally a good laugh. Investigate the Legions forum, and see if any grab your fancy. Once you get the magic 3 posts, send some PMs to people that make the thread and ask if you can visit a while. That will give you a taste of what you are letting yourself in for. If they don't allow you to visit, do you really want to join them? Finally, if there's no legion that you like the look of from their recruitment postings, then make your own! Tell people your rank, race and profession (certain races and professions give bonuses to the base, so you give back to the legion too), and most importantly what you want out of a legion. I guarantee you'll find one eventually! Good luck!!

That's the tricky thing about online games. Some people like yourself use it as an escape from the day to day grind. The sad thing is that their are other people who use it to lash out at the world. Personally, I've grown accustomed to both friendly sportsmanship and the trash-talking that can only come from a flame war. LOL!
I do hope you find a legion that suits you, if you haven't already, Arc. Don't lose heart in GL though. This is a great universe to be in. I've been around since almost the very beginning when there really weren't any legions formed and you actually had to fend for yourself. The game has evolved into an entity of it's own and in doing so has afforded me the privilege of meeting some really outstanding people...and, a few despicable ones as well. Nevertheless, it's never a dull moment.

OK take it from someone who did the first 60 without a legion
1.you can survive fine and dandy in the beginning without help - however if I had to do it all over again starting in a "GOOD" legion from the beginning I would have be better off and take GOOD to mean one of the top ones - just not any legion there are number of bad ones out there - been on some of them
so take your time and find a good one
top legions are picky and may only allow for higher level players - they recruit in other ways - messaging players
you could also choose to help build a new one - just find one with active members (playing weekly - within 7 day limit) low active membership is not a good sign as bonuses and NPC alerts depend on activity on the legion so low activity means less support and less alerts
If you interested check out Obsidian Order - we can use new active members
2.legions can help out with planets and artis in the beginning - something you will do without on your own (low production and scanning ability)
3. bases provide extra production artifact & research (you'll need it) better research production early pays off leter and artifact production is important in this game
4. legions provide security from Multihackers/multi raiders take it from me
get hit by someone once, twice or three times a day(for weeks) - and during each disable get raided 8-12 times and hacked 8-12 times by that person you wind up not being able to store research or artifact points (being raided before you wake up and lose a whole whack of points)
you'll be less likely to get hit by those people because good legions provide security (you send an alert out and vengence is laid down for it)
4. legions provide bonuses for you planet security
5 legions provide additional missions
6 legions provide addition help with elite NPC's - shared alerts

This thread is really quite old now and I'm not entirely sure why it was necroed Just so everyone knows, Arc Light joined S W A R M very shortly after his initial post at the invitation of Reaper and recently visited us at TWH. Arc Light is absolutely thriving, is very good company and seems to be enjoying the game much more in good legions than solo.

I appreciate the necro bump Deigobene... cheers mate I'm going to try to stay around the message board a little more. There is so much good advice in this thread that I hope anyone who is legionless and wandering / wondering like I was can be helped by all the wisdom here. It's not that you can't play the game solo... but doing so is like walking across country on foot. By yourself. Joining a good legion is like making that same trip...but in a party bus with all of your friends... and they have beer. It's top flight company and you'll get to where you want to go sooooo much faster. As has been mentioned, not all legions are equal and finding a GOOD one is key. Good is a robust and active membership, a strong base (artifacts are indeed everything), seasoned and respected leadership, and a community atmosphere that believes in helping each other achieve. Also as has been mentioned, finding a legion that is in line with your playing style is also key. I have been known to be combative on occasion so joining a legion that focused on PvP was a shoe-in for me. I've received outstanding mentoring and support from my legion as they've helped me correct some of the ship mistakes I made before I got there. They've been generous with their resources...but more importantly they've been generous with their time. I have been educated (which is always an on-going process) and through the guidance of the leadership and officers I am following a development plan that will fine tune my ship and take me where I want to go. Obviously one doesn't have to fight other players to enjoy playing. There are players that are greatly respected merchants and traders who can build worlds and wield enormous influence in the game. There is something for everyone and Galaxy Legion has far, far, more depth than I ever knew existed until I joined a legion. It literally opened up a whole other world that I doubt I would have ever found on my own. I've visited new legions, met top-notch people like Deigobene, Shinar, Serne, Reaper and so many others and I look forward to making new friends wherever the game takes me. None of this would have happened had I gone solo. Thanks to everyone who has posted here so far and hopefully this thread can assist and inform other new players as they try to decide how they want to approach the game.
