 crit hacks almost impossible?!

Any experienced hackers out there have any idea how often a crit hack occurs or how to improve the odds of getting one?

I am Rank 36, have 1151 hacks as of right now, and JUST got my first crit hack to my surprise. I am using 3 Cipherbots, and a dark pyramid so I have 185 cloak and 1 scan. I have had multiple crit fail hacks against players with no scan/cloak. I have had several crit raids (have only 302 successful raids). I have tried hacking with a couple quad-frames on to boost my scan a bit, but a few weeks of that didn't show any significant difference. Most of my targets have either none, or very low scan.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just VERY rare to get a crit hack? Crit fails seem to be so much more common, even against ships with no cloak or scan at all. Hope that someone can shed some light on my conundrum. Thanks :)

3k hacks and approximately 10 critical hacks, most of which were terrible, terrible planets (although I did just take a cross-signal restrainer off someone, thanks Shenkuri!)

You guys are probably doing something wrong, I have 1580 hacks or so and I have over 20 critical ones.

And do you keep them in a journal ? Last I know you don't have stat for crit hacks.

I dont have especially high cloak or scan for my rank and i've gotten plenty of crit hacks, so no its not impossible.

When I was hacking a lot, I got a minimum of 1 crit hack per week which is about 1:300. Averaged out with the higher weeks it was probably closer to 1:200. On the other hand, I also got crit fails at a rate of about 1:500 (one of the main reasons I hate hacking), so I might not be a representative case.

Well I have a theory on critical hacking.. and a lot of ppl will looked at this and shake their heads..

Its just a theory thats all and if my theory is correct Tree will owe me 300 foci's cause i did msg Dan about it a while back and since he has not replied back this is a good time to bring this up here..

So here goes:

Hi Dan,

Been playing ur game for over 3 years now and this is what i found on Critical Hacking so far:

I lot of ppl think that critical hacking is just pure luck and that's not the case in fact is just simple math..

I will use my ship for an example :

Planets Found 920
Planets Occupied 362

That being said Lets say a planet thief is alerted with a lot of actions and his count is :

Planets Found 800
Planets Occupied 250

There is no way i would be able to crit hack him with no matter how many flares and clouders on his ship with my current planetary ship stats.. Cause I think critical hacking works the same as for planet scans the greyer the bar the less chance u will scan a planet = crit hack..

So for my self to get a Crit hack or two of him for sure i need to be at least at:

Planets Found 550-600 so basically u need to be in a ratio of 300-350 planets on scans from planets owned where u will do most of the critical hacks.. asp per planet scanning with 11k + scan where the bar shows that ur scan rate is "Good"

and if he decided to hack u back and you guys keep going like that for few days and you will gain more planet critical hack and he will give up his .. given the mention above planetary stats..

This is just my theory it has worked for me for many years dealing with ppl and i have not once gave up a crit hack to them cause i have used this ratio when dealing with ppl that are alerted for 48 hours..

Could you confirm this theory of mine somewhat true in regards of critical hacking please..

You are Rank 35, so even with every scan and cloak mod on, your hacking power is still not going to be that much different to someone in your badging range with nothing at all. As a result, you can't expect heaps of crit hacks.

Not sure that I fully understand what your trying to say here. Are you saying that you believe crit hacking has to do with you ability to find a planet at your current scan level? This post is just confusing me, sorry :)

So basically you'll crit hack more often if you're scan chance is good. (crit hack means another scan for planet)

Don't know if this helps, but I've had quite a few crit hacks... and most, if not all have been achieved while I had no chance of scanning a planet (i.e. completely grayed out).

You're forgetting critical hacks that are counter hacks as well

Ive had quite a number already - got some good arti ...mega ?x planets for it too

id say way over 20 here - got 10 at least from counter hacks alone...
closer to 10% for me


I suspect some formula - dan could help us here


where the enemy cloak is weaken by your scan
and
your cloak is weakened by enemy scan

the difference would be the likelyhood of hack and the wider the spread the more likely the critical hack

somewhere in the forum, I recall there is a formula for hack :

Your cloak vs their scan (1st roll)
if successful then you steal RP based on the difference in rank (more the higher the target is), with a 5% chance to crit (fixed, no bonus whatsoever)
if you fail
Their cloak vs your scan (2nd roll) (more the higher you are), with a 5% chance to crit.
if they succeed, they steal RP based on the difference in rank
