Do these give any sort of reward for disabling or is it just xp?

I've killed a couple of Dranniks, and i've never had anything from them. That doesn't mean there is no chnce of getting something, but it means the chances are probably low.

Uncommon and Rare NPC's definitely give you stuff. I've had a Terran Outsider Harmonic Pulser from a rare NPC. :mrgreen:

Yep, it's a Shield equivalent of the Energy Relays and you can equip four of them. Just need to find the rest. :)
