Best tip: There is no such thing as a best tip :)
It all depends on your playing style. Whichever it is, whatever you do to other players in-game, expect to be treated the same way back. Try to keep a cool head also.

Artifacts points are worth getting plenty of. It is worth it.

Research is one of the most important things you can focus on in game. But you need mineral production to pay for it. Keep your mineral production between 1/4 and 1/2 of your research production.

At level 85 my minerals are at 266 and my research is at 1204. Since the value of minerals you get go up as you level you should not over invest early. I have enough minerals for my style of play. I would not bother with artifacts until after level 40, before then you can't save up enough points to get any really good ones anyway. Most players will tell you to put the majority of your rank points into decks, but a recent change to the game gives a small advantage to ships with less decks. I don't know the exact implications of that yet.

In that i have been pretty unlucky, found too few research planets as my mining is almost as high. i simply refuse to colonize tiny planets lol

Scan more than one planet before settling your first... You'll almost certainly find something more worthwhile a few scans down the road. Small planets with sparse resources aren't worth it.

Of course, there are the lucky few that find a massive terra with 5x mega rich everything, or an exotic for their first planet. If you do, settle that, and don't forget to defend it! ;)

My first planet was very large and very abundant in two categories. That was lucky really. I had only scanned one (big noob mistake). Someone took it a month ago. It was my worst planet at that point. It holds a place in my heart though. I haven't scanned in FOREVER and my queue says I will probably want it back some day. It's nice to encourage plasticity in your planet holdings by NOT defending any planet below your median and maxing out the production of your crap planets. Odds are they won't be fluxed out of your list. Planet disparity may encourage a lower level to flux it. They pretty much don't have planet fluxes though.

Best tip for newbie is to read this website for information. Information = power.

You already did that as first step.. You are on right track. :)
