I've had my fair share of battles, i've seen plenty of examples of this: you have 1992 atk/803 def. you attack someone with 5 atk and 5 def. you do ~60 dmg per attack. you attack someone with 624 atk and 434 def. you do ~220 dmg per attack. why? then you attack someone with 230 atk and 182 def. every attack, you do them ~92 dmg, and they do you ~70. HOW. THIS GUY ALMOST KILLED ME BECAUSE HIS HULL WAS SO BEEFED UP. i keep reading in guides and the wiki that combat calculations are simple addition/subtraction. if this is the case, then the game is broken. i know you've seen this too. what on earth determines who does what to whom? |

Can you link me to the wiki page that says that so that I can correct it please? All ships have a damage cap. The cap is decks/2 or (rank+19)/2, whichever is greater. The battle is done as a % of your damage cap. |

What you havent taken into account is the amount of tactical officers and helmsmen. They play an important role in your attack and defense. The simple answer is, no, no-one except Dan knows exactly how damage calculations work. |

hm. when i went to look for the wiki section posting the math, i couldn't find it. i thought it was there, perhaps i was mistaken. i could just have been told/seen so often from hearsay and in conversations that i thought it was there. i don't mind that i'm not doing more damage or that there is a cap, i'm bothered that these people are doing so much to me. for example, i just battled someone 25 lvls lower than myself, i had 1992 attack and 806 def, they had atk 207 and def 15. i did them 56 dmg, they were doing me 126 per battle. i recorded down 3 battles this way. i also have their name and legion for future reference. might ask dan. i did take into account tactical officers and helmsmen...the attack you get from them counts into the number doesn't it. whenever i add more helmsment or tactical officers, my attack/def numbers go up. so that should be directly reflected by his numbers i would think. unless i'm to understand that they actually count for double or triple damage in some secret formula. |

You probably hit that lower rank for their damage cap. Look above at strm's post for the answer. And remember, the number of the damage doesn't mean much. If you had 10k hull, and you lost 150 HP per hit, it's a tiny fraction of your total HP. If they have 100 hull and they lose 60 HP, that's 60% of his/her HP gone in one hit. The game is not flawed, you just need to learn to tell whether you're really winning or not. |

Tactial officers and helmsmen only show up when you use a spy probe on them. When you attack them it only shows the attack and defense form installed modules. Quote: for example, i just battled someone 25 lvls lower than myself, i had 1992 attack and 806 def, they had atk 207 and def 15. i did them 56 dmg, they were doing me 126 per battle. i recorded down 3 battles this way. i also have their name and legion for future reference. might ask dan. He has gone the scout strategy I think. You are hitting his damage cap, which is (rank + 19)/2 or decks/2. So he only needs very little defense. He has a hell of a lot of tactical officers, which dont add to attack when your hitting him. Again he has spent rank points in tactical officers not decks. So Im guessing he is roughly ranked 112 which makes you atleast rank 137 with atleast 252 decks. |

Actually, a lot of us know how the damage works. Essentially, the damage is decided as a percent of your damage cap, based on the ratio of their attack to your defense, with the damage approaching your damage cap. Increasing attack gives continually lower increases to damage as well (as in, if your attack is fairly higher than their defense, doubling your attack won't double your damage). Increasing decks without increasing defense causes you to take more damage. Part of the problem is that you probably have more decks that you aren't using efficiently, and another part is that you focus too much on attack in PvP, so you aren't well-balanced, which is what this game is about. |
