That should go without saying, right?

Except that I just noticed the first planet I ever scanned (and ignored) has now been colonized. It is a massive gas planet with best (and only) resource: SPARSE research. It's producing 6 units/hour (as a new colony, granted) with 8 research stations. AND FOR SOME REASON THE OWN THINKS IT ALSO NEEDS A STRUCTURAL SHIELD AND TWO ORBITAL MINEFIELDS. He/she is rank 17.

There's another thread on here that talks about when you should have planetary defenses and when not to bother. This planet is a definite "not bother" (the owner should never have colonized it to begin with). I'm figuring there could be two misconceptions people have:

1. They believe that if they scan an unoccupied planet, they are obliged to colonize it
2. They believe that the instructions in the other thread that say defend any planet that is large/rich or better means large OR rich, when in fact it means large AND rich.

Yes, the planet above is massive, but if you can't get anything out of it, it's worthless. And no one will delete your account if you pass up colonizing a planet.

The other thing that may have happened is the owner may have scanned two dozen planets and this is the best one of the entire lot, and he/she has no OTHER planets at all that are any good. If this happens to you, START OVER! You've had a run of bad luck that won't get better because of all the bad planets you've already discovered. Level 17 is not that far from the beginning.

For example, sometimes, I crit-hack for planet or scanned for one.. I saw very odd way of planetary structures that owners had..

For example, one planet that had artifact extremely rich but sparse in research.. He put ALL research structures on that planet leaving none for artifact!! I guess they had their own mindset that they must invest everything into research no matter what..

some weeks ago i invaded a planet where the user had put +2 AP buildings on an extreamly rich research planet (AP was spare)... i didnt get it, so i liberated that planet from him.

Seen that myself. Mostly just got them off my list as they where not very good.

The only time I have but the wrong building on is when I hit the wrong button to build. Costly that can be >.<.

Yes... many levels ago, shortly after I lost my newbie protection, a fellow snagged a rich artifact/sparse mining planet from me. He was some 30 levels higher than me, and there was little I could do about it at the time.

He removed all my low level artifact stuff, and installed mining drones.... go figure???

I am higher rank than him now and will take it back soon... I can use the APs.

Well here it means Large AND Rich.
