So I just hit rank 20 (I meant to hold off for a couple more days but accidentally hit 20) and need to start defending my planets. Can anyone tell me what a good defense/attack amount is? I've been looking and haven't found any real advice about protecting your planets.

Don't bother... If someone wants your planet, they will take it. You are better off spending the space on cloaking so they don't find it and/or anti-invasion to put them off for a day if they try to invade.

Personally, I'm not defending any of my planets. There are none I can't do without and maxing out on resources is more important to me at the moment.

That is what I would do as well I don't put defense on a world. If it starts to get attacked. I just guard it and put on some artifacts to help it's defense and attack. On my really good worlds I do put on some defense in case it ever is attacked the more defense on a world the harder it is to invade. Cloak is your best defense because if they can't find it they can't invade it.

I would rather use planetary invasion of 175 for 1 size that would serve a better resistance once discovered via hack or failed cloak.

I equip key planets I can't afford to lose with 3 size of total 525 plus some attack/defense from planetary structure artifacts so it'll be tough to be taken on first try..

Allow me to translate for people who don't understand you because you don't give enough information:

I equip key planets I can't afford to lose with Lazuli Pylon, a size one artifact building dropped from NPC battles. It gives +175 vs invasion so for 3 size points, I get a total of 525 invasion defense. Additionally, I add some attack/defense from planetary structure artifacts so it'll be tough to be taken on first try.

I hope that helps those who don't speak incomplete sentence!

This is good to remember. Phase Cutter (+1 mining, +40 attack), Space Elevator(+1 Artifact, +50 Population) and Spy Uplink (+1 Research, +40 Cloak) are very important, often dropped artifacts. As you can have two of each, each in a 1 space building, you are getting good bonuses for small spots. Basically, you are getting +80 attack, +100 population, +80 cloak for 6 planetary spaces in addition to whatever else they do. Those attack and cloak will even double if you have enough GL friends. These should be placed as soon as you get them and have a planet worth putting them on. (While it is nice, don't bother putting a Phase Cutter on a planet with minimal mining, save it for a planet with Rich or better mining, or until you've got them on all of the good mining planets).

Phase cutter is +30 attack.

My plan is if it is not seen add as much cloaking as I have extra space for (chassis and small cloak gen buildings are a must). To try and remain unseen. I add pop and other defenses when my planet is seen. Well if I care to really keep the planet anyway.

How do you know if it's been seen? Also, I don't have much in the way of weapons/defense as I've been spending time finding good planets. Most of mine are very large with at least extremely abundant resources.

Use a flux prob on the planet. It will tell you how many people other then you have scanned the planet.

Wow. I can't believe I ignored that little artifact. That information is actually really good if you're cloaking a planet to tell you if it's working. I don't suppose it tells you anything about who scanned it?

Cloaking plus invasion defense plus Planet Flux may be the best combination - you don't bother with population/def as a determined person will get through it, but if you can halt the first invasion you can (I think) take the planet off their list. Those building types seem to take less space for their effect then trying to bolster the planet against the actual attack. What do you think ?

Vortex deflectors, population, and a legion alert can be a good combo since it will stop people from using unstable warp gates... I think

If it's stats are less than a Large Rich don't bother with much of anything. If it's large/rich or better then just stick some cloaking on it. Personally I'd much rather put another cloaking structure on it than defense, as the higher your cloaking, the less likely your going to need the defense. If someone does start attacking your planet, especially if, say, they hack it from you, giving you advanced warning, and you particularly want to keep the planet, then cram it full of pop and defense, especially defense. I never put attack on a planet.
