What is an "Illegal Module"?

 What is an "Illegal Module"? When I look at a module's ability, it shows the word NONE.

It means that you've exceeded the amount of deck space on your ship.

Unless you mean on a planet in which case it means that you don't get anything from it because you have not researched that tech yet.

it either means you havn't got enough space for it (planet or player) or you havn't got the sufficient level of research for it.

I think he is talking about planets; the word "none" comes up in caps and in red when you conquer a planet and do not have the research required to use it.
