think of it this way: any and all tax income is going into supporting the population.

Ya why do you think you do not have to pay upkeep for buildings? The taxes they pay keep everything running.

Though if a colony happeness rating was added to the game. Then I could see a tax building being added to place on a planet. Ya it would mean extra direct income, but it might make it easier to take the planet away from you.

actually now that I think about I geuss the direct production you get could kinda be considered your revenue above the taxes it takes to maintain the structures ,

the happiness rating affecting the overall revenue and ability invade +- effect would be interesting it would add a whole nother layer to the game .

but that would mean implimenting a new tech tree for planetary happiness wouldnt it ?

also would have to rethink planetary population , many games like moo2 ,sid meiers alpha centauri etc took overcrowding as part of the equation in colony happiness ratings so the planetary population would have to be changed from growing only up to the point of max capacity but beyond and unhappiness added for overcrowding .

planetary sizes and build slots would have to be increased or all the tiny and small planets would forever be on the unhappy side because no one would want to waste a couple of slots for say a holovid arena or some such when those slots could be used for mining or artifacts .

Yes the idea might mean a whole lot of changes over time. the extra depth said adjustment to the game could be fun. But it would be a long run goal to add.

It would also give more reason for having population on a planet, or a reason for grabbing resource-low planets. Fill them with population and tax them to death.

You could have a new tech field for it, alternating between happiness and tax structures. Happiness could bring an invasion defence bonus as well, as the people fight more to protect their homes.
