My question deals with how to "share" a planet that has been shared with me by my leader.
The planet came up on my list and i shared guard duties on it at that time. I have yet to reap
any rewards/gain any production from this union. Have i missed a crucial step?

If I understood the question right you're asking if guarding a planet gives you any of its production. The answer is no. Guarding provides extra defense for that planet so it is harder to conquer while your ship is defending it.

sound like the planet was alerted to you. this just adds it to your scans for 12 hours. after 12 hours, it will disappear from your scans.
the exception is if you have colonized the planet. then it will remain on your scans. however, the only way to get production from the planet is if you currently occupy it. you get no production for guarding it, or for just having it on scan.
