 Minerals Vs Artifacts

In the longer term where would you focus planetary production?
Focus on Artifact Production 73%  73%  [ 16 ]
Focus on Mining Production 9%  9%  [ 2 ]
Keep production of both 50/50ish 18%  18%  [ 4 ]

I understand that a balance of both is important, but I am not sure where to balance. After upgrading planetary structures to +8's, I have my mineral and artifact production at very similar rate, this has served me well so far but I consider myself to be still in the lower-mid levels.

Would it be wise to specialise production in one direction as I progress?

I have disregarded Reasearch for now, in my case it is higher then my combined artifact and mineral production and I feel happy to leave it as it is for now.

I'm Rank 666 atm. My ratio roughly is 44% artifact. 29% research. 27% mining.

At this point the only planets I'm looking for are artifacts.

Yes, artifacts are the best for maximizing toward the later levels as Frail said, because eventually you'll run out of Research, and getting a ton of Minerals doesn't really get you anything. That being said, Minerals are a requirement, the one resource that is a necessity to stay flying, so you might as well take the mineral planets you need first, and then get the artifact planets later. But yeah, at some point you won't need more minerals, you can look at the prices of things on the wiki to figure out if you're near that point or not.

I just keep an eye on my credits bottom line if at the end of the day I'm richer I'm good on minerals if I'm losing credits or holding even I either upgrade my planets or add another mineral planet, I'm rank 87 and I like artifacts the most with research next and minerals last. Like said above when research is done you will get credits then minerals can be had. Research is good mostly if your enlarging your ship (decks) to take advantage of it, that makes you a bigger target unless your putting the rank points into cargo space to be more of a transformer having just what you need when you need it.

Artifacts over minerals are good, artifacts planets can give you escaped prisoners and lots of nice artifacts.
Plus what he/she said below.

Thanks for the opinions and votes. The general consensus appears to be artifacts, which is fortunate based on todays scan blitz :D

This could you explain more. I don't want to grow to much research as ultimately what you can research runs out. Having focused on it first, I have an inflated RP/hour I already can't fit the modules researched onto my ship hence researching +8 buildings and scanners.

Heavy research builds are the predominate type of play it seems. In the beginning you move through them fairly easily enough but at the end it can be rather daunting. Personally I like my heavy artifact build. Researching bigger and bigger mods doesn't do much for you after a certian point if you don't have the ship to equip them all. I tend to think of my ship's improvement as based on the number of permanent mods I have equipped on it. A heavy artifact build allows this. I can kill anything within 70 ranks of me and hold off anyone up to 120ish ranks above me, just simply by the shear size of my ship. This of course is dependant on wether or not you're installing combat type mods. Once your ship is big enough to have the max of all types of mods equiped on it, then you can start colonizing mmore research planets to up your research a bit more. Naturally this all only works out well as long as your scan results play along with it.

Yes, I have seen your ship in the battle tab, and it sure does pack a punch. ;)

Thats when you spendn a couple of bucks, drop the research only planets in exchange for artifact planets ;)

You could also just take Research/Artifact planets, so when you run out of research you can switch them to artifact production
