Nope. People are only able to hit for xx per shot, the added decks required to install defense mods raises your damage cap and likely will not add sufficient defense to balance that. Just add your Android Helmsmen and you'll be set.

It does have some limited use, but generally the decks are better spent elsewhere. Getting the Velox Thrusters and /maybe/ the Trinities is a good idea after you have all available hulls and what weapons you need to have sufficient attack.

it depends on the rank. at higher ranks with more decks anyways some high efficiency defenses and % def is good.
at lower ranks your cap is your def and thats all you need.

defense below a certain amount is useless because you will be capped or nearly capped anyway and thus negligible effect.
If your def is high enough such that most ppl can't cap you, then % def mods would be quite handy. but that likely require a large amount of helmsman, probably won't happen for SSB until the 600-800 rank(and considering that SSB pretty much means slow ranking too, hell of a long time)

Mhmm. If your attack is 1/25th of the aggressor's attack at your rank, you'll be capped on. Above that point, damage falls slowly to begin with (with them still capping sometimes) and then falls rapidly. The damage curve looks like this:

Of course, since decks are low, their damage is low and the actual damage reduction from defense will be lower. The % damage reduction will be the same, however. If you have 1/3 of the decks as someone else, but otherwise identical stats you'll take 1/3 of the damage.

Is there any math that can be done to determine how much defense relative to your attacker you'd need for them to only hit for X amount? For instance, if my defense is 1000 and your attack is 100, you are only going to hit me for 1-2 per hit (no idea if those numbers are even correct, but I believe you can understand what I'm asking)

This is a PvP damage calculator I made it not perfect but basically you need 5 times the attack of the person def to hit for damage cap.

I just tested it. We also get different results.

For the stats of:
You:
Attack 1684
Defense 618
Deck Size 423

Enemy:
Attack 1543
Defense 973
Deck Size 600

(Just what was in your calc previously)

We get this result:
Damage You Take
Min 70
Average 106
Max 176

Damage Enemy Takes
Min 69
Average 104
Max 173

I get:
You Deal: 109(61 to 156) Damage.
You Take: 106(62 to 144) Damage.

The damage formula is

tanh(attack*(rand(0.666,1.6)/(defense*5))*damagecap

The formula you're using is:
attack(rand(0.666,1.666)/(defense*5)*damagecap

It's missing the tanh element.
