OK, I tried searching for this, but couldn't really find a clear answer (although my search-fu isn't that good!).

What do people define as small/medium/large ship builds? i.e. how many decks, etc. Is there anything else other than size that determines s/m/l?

SSB tries to minimize the number of decks they have relative to their rank and hull+shield. The theory is their damage cap will be so low that it will be hard to disable them; they say stuff like "it takes a MINIMUM of 100 hits to disable me" because their hull+shield is 100 times their damage cap.

I don't know if someone has a definitive definition of each. I think I saw something on the forum about minimizing a damage cap formula, but technically, the minimum is like what, rank 1?

Just build the ship to you size you want. Someone wants to kill you bad enough they will spend the energy and/or debuff you.

Small = rank+19 decks
Medium= somewhere in between
large = enough to install most to all modules. I think max is around 7.2k decks

Thanks for the answers, and thanks for the definition Wolfy. Next question then ...

Why is a SSB rank +19? Where does that number come from? Now I'm just curious, as at rank 480 and 1600 decks, I know I'm MSB...

The damage cap is either (rank + 19) or (decks / 2), whichever is higher. That's the way it works, so an SSB ship build would want the cap to be as low as possible, which would be their rank plus 19.

(rank + 19 / 2)

(rank + 19) / 2

Actually a strict SSB (SSSB) would go with decks = (rank+19).

Info from Senatorhung according to his compiled ship log showdown charts:

SSB (not strict) could still entail decks = SSSB upto 3x (SSSB)

MSB would be from over 3x (SSSB) to 6x (SSSB)

And LSB would have over 6x (SSSB) in decks.

(for a given rank). (substitute SSSB = rank + 19)

My perception would be 2x for the SSB end border; 2x to 5x for MSB; over 5x for LSB though.

Just to confirm again, the formula for damage cap is (Rank +19) / 2, not just Rank +19.
The difference is significant, so important that people are given the correct info.

"The PVP damage cap formula is the LARGER of the following two possible formulas:
Decks / 2
(Rank + 19) / 2
A ship that minimizes their damage cap using either formula is considered a small ship build or SSB."

Deck / 2 is the calculation for everyone who has a larger damage cap than Rank +19 / 2 not just SSB's

You realize by this "definition" with my 6400 decks at rank 2030 I am a MSB and literally no one over the rank 1500 is considered a LSB, at least no good ship.

And that's an interesting realization.

I have a simple solution to this "problem":

    Forcible Ship-Bot Relocation Trap
    [ Trap - 1 Week ] When applied, a defending ship has a chance
    to forcibly relocate fifty used Ship-Bots to an attacking ship
