im making this post to help new players understand what actions if any they can do to avoid attacks. it is also a guide to avoid making fights spin out of control.

for attackers / raiders / hackers
1) dont disable/hack/raid more than once. attacking more than once tells your enemy that the attacks will keep coming and something has to be done to stop you. typically this will result in legion rage and high activity on your log. avoid wars at all cost. kill one player enough, and it may draw in more powerful legion members to deal with you.
2) dont hack higher levels unless you can handle them in combat
3)if attacking randomly for XP or whatever, look at the legion size!
4) ships with no guns and only scan etc will typically have traps...
5) dont contnue a attack if the damage is more/equal/ or less but high enough to cause lots of damage. not only will this cause repair cost, it means a retaliation attack could kill you!
6)attacks draw fire/ retaliation if unprovoked. get ready to defend!
7)after an attack throw out a trap. nothing like adding insult to injury like having a retaliation attack end in your favor. (omicrons traps should be considered offensive weapons in this case, expect a second attack!)
8) Use with extreme caution. These actions could lead to a big war should if the victim retaliates.
9) For hackers, make sure you have enough cloak+scan to increase your rate of success while hacking.
10) AVOID getting into the kills leader board by having too many kills.
11) High levels tend to kill shared ships MORE if they have high kill/death ratio (or shared many times), and a low kills/death ratio are normally ignored by higher rank players.
12. If you attack WITHOUT disabling a ship, you are completely safe from retaliation. Only disabling, raiding, or hacking will identify you to another player. HOWEVER, traps WILL put your name in the log of the attacked regardless.
13. Remember that once you appear on a ships log (from notification, traps, or from alert sharing), you STAY on their legion's ship log for a long time, and they can target you at will, no matter what their level.

for defenders / victims
1) 2 options here. attack or not to attack. if you attack, its ok. the person you attacked will prob know its a possibility(only retaliate once). if you dont attack, stack more def against the type of attack.
2) if hacked alot, add scanning. if disabled alot, add weapons and def. its best to 1st reduce the damage you take, then work on your damage output. this will stop attacks.
3) use the full extent of your resources (legion, tech, etc). send a message you are not to be messed with!
4) dont wear stats like 10 deaths and no kills. this paints a big target on your back. if you have at least ONE kill that tells the attacker that you are strong enough to kill, and to use caution. a kill ratio like 15/15 is GREAT! even if the ratio is 10/15. so this is why retaliation is important to raising this stat.
5) be patient. and level as fast as possible. it is possible that you can adapt your ship to counter that ship. use the ships log to find them when you are ready.
6) traps are great. try to use traps that prevent further attack. traps like omicron's may be counter productive. they are offensive and not defensive so if you kill an attacker, it is possible they will come back! traps will add your name to the attackers log, so use carefully.
7. If you've been disabled and there is nothing you need to do with a functioning ship, consider NOT repairing. You can't be attacked until you repair. (You CAN be raided, but that is risky for the enemy especially if you have a large crew.). energy is still building at the same rate. your weapons are useless so remove them and add scanners/cloak. some missions can be completed while disabled, so stay disabled as long as possible. leveling WILL revive your ship for free.

for both:
1)use comms to call for truce BEFORE fighting gets out of hand if possible. If not reaching such truce may be just a futile attempt when both sides are burning with an uncontrollable fire.
2) Installing cloak may help if you are just trying to keep out of the line of fire and are not already in other peoples ship log.
3) Level fast but try not to out-level your tech. It's possible to fall behind in research if you level too quickly. You don't want to bring autocannons to a plasma fight. top of the line modules are better than doubling up older modules.

disclaimer: this guide was written by an aggressive player.

this post was modified by suggestions.

Possible correction/notes for attackers
1) Don't disable/hack/raid more than once.

7) Use with extreme caution. This will lead to a big war should if the victim retaliates
8) For hackers, make sure you have enough cloak+scan to increase your rate of success while hacking.
9) AVOID getting into the kills leader board by having too many kills.

Defenders, call for truce BEFORE fighting gets out of hand if possible. If not reaching such truce may be just a futile attempt when both sides are burning with an uncontrollable fire.

7) Installing cloak may help if you are just trying to keep out of the line of fire and are not already in other peoples ship log

12. Setting of traps would also give you away. Ship logs lasts for 7 days.
