From my understanding, it doesn't boost your attack. It just provides "1500 hidden" attack effect only when you are invading (not attacking a planet)

Best to only use it when needed. you don't want to waste it on a 0 att/def planet...

not using these, or engineered virus. Wouldn't want to tarnish my galactic reputation.

Well, you are going to need the mutagenic for invading sometime. Don't you hate invasion failures? Mutagenic "modifies" your weapon only, not the planet itself. I doubt that anyone will know you actually used a mutagenic to invade their planets. Think of it as a BIG crimson obelisk that only activates for the Invade button.

galactic reputation? invading planets and conquest is part of the game...these artifacts are legit, it's not like you are exploiting the game, you are playing by the rules! besides if the enemy can't defend their planets they deserve to lose them.

Sort of kidding, I know there isn't anything like galactic reputation that would be affected by an unethical choice like using biological weapons. I have taken a couple enemy planets, haven't had a problem with invasion failure, maybe that will come later.

There is a planet very sparse all across and small(I hadnt found anything better so I thought that was OK) that had only 1 defensive structure, bunkers  , but I tried invading it 2x and both times failed, then I found a very large volcanic with rich or very abundant accross and stopped trying.

I had a light laser cannon and heavy mass driver when I tried, and all he had were 1 bunker and 1 minefield

your attack needs to be a lot higher than that and it's still luck...the planet's attack and def matter when you are attacking it....invading it is a separate skill...one that is added to by a high ship attack, mixed with items that give boosts to invasion like the mech and psionic amp and mutagenic cartridges

Galactic reputation is of course something to consider. He's referring to the Aerlen Accords, the document signed by every major race except the Konqul. This was enacted after the release of a Krionis Virus into the atmosphere of Theta Pegasi V, turning that once-thriving terran paradise into the large toxic rock it is today. Any mutagenically engineered agent is strictly forbidden by these accords, although sadly many "unofficial" private militaries still use them. The ruling authorities claim not to condone these attacks, but there is rarely any proof linking them to their empire, so the only real political damage is to that race's galactic reputation.

That was a really good story Headless. Playing as an Aerlen Biologist (yeah yeah, I know), I've failed at a few invasions (sold my psionic amplifier DUMB) and let me tell you... a +1500 cartridge would be AWESOME.

Someday...

* I have read though the posts a few times and I think I am finally understanding. Invading only happens when the population is low enough so that you can take control of the planet. Still I think this Location of Exotica is a bit unfair. Guess it makes sense that the person currently controlling it is level 140.

I have a question about the Mutagenic Cartridge. I just got the Location of Exotica. It has about 2000 defense and I really don't have the firepower to hit it well even with 8 Quantum Devastators. The planet is immune to artifacts as well as can not be shared with allies and understandably so. Does being immune to artifacts mean that the Mutagenic Cartridges are ineffective when invading? The only reason I ask is because I tried to use one and it should have given me well over 3000 attack for invasion and I still only managed to inflict 2-3 population reduction of a total population of 940. Have I totally misunderstood how the Mutagenic Cartridge works for invasion? Anyone that can answer this would be of great help to me.

Yes, you completley misunderstood, it only affects INVASION not attacking the planet, invasion is after you reduce the planet pop. to 10, kill all gaurds, and when you click "invade" not "attack". Invasion attack affects invasion, regular attack affects pop reduction.

Take note:

It doesn't affect any damage when you click the attack button, ONLY for the INVADE button
(in other words, it increases your invasion success only, not planetary damage dealt)

Yeah, that explains why not many people are fighting over it, not really worth the effort I guess.
