I saw there was no timer on these so I assume we have "forever," but is it really forever? I'd rather not take the energy and time to kill these just to get some rewards that I won't be using for some time. Can I let them sit in my combat tab for weeks or months?

NPC battles at the end of a mission cycle will stay until you kill them. Best advice I can give is that if you're unsure if you'll have the energy to complete 15/15 on the mission AND kill the Ergo's, do the mission till its fully completed. Then go back and kill all the Ergospheres. Not only will they stay on your tab indefinitely, they also will exceed your normal slot limit for NPCs.

Great, thanks. As for getting 15... hah! At rank 48 I may be able to get 6, but that's better than nothing.

I think when they appear they are in excess of your normal slots. But when you have NPCs drop off your normal slots, the missions NPCs move to your normal slots. If you don't kill them off, they will eventually fill all your normal slots, preventing you from seeing any random NPCs until they're taken care of. I've always killed them off before that point, so I'm not 100% certain.
