If you're planning for PvP, focus on weapons, hull and defense. Always research the whole set of something straight through, because: (A) the last step module in a tier gives the best value per deck and (B) it helps you keep track of what you have researched. I recommend always upgrading your modules from last step to last step (ie.. Heavy xxxx Cannon to Heavy yyyy Cannon) but at lower levels things are relatively cheap and you should be able to upgrade to the intermediate modules. Hull repairs are cheap for you so don't bother putting shields on your ship (hull is a better point to deck ratio) but you'll want to research shields from time to time just for the planet defense shields.
Hoard those energy refill artifacts like a squirrel with acorns. They become much more useful to you later in the game (unless you need some energy to fight an elite or something that drops really good stuff like a TO Troop Carrier).
