It seems like the xp rewarded isn't random, but is 6 to 16 per shot and depends on the damage or the damage related to each player's damagecap done. I hit someone with no att/def modules, and did basically max damage to them while taking very little, and got 16 xp every time; then I hit someone while having no att/def and got 8 every time (taking max damage myself and doing almost none).

Could it be a ratio between damage dealt and damage received? I'll keep a list if you want when I next PvP.

OK it is randomized; 7-20 xp when overpowering people. Average is about 3.0 xp ratio. If they overpower you constantly, its more like 1-2 xp ratio. So it's randomized, but the average depends on damagecap, I think, done to both ppl.

Just something I've noticed is that you get more XP on the disabling shot.

True, but I wasn't going by that data. I'll keep track of my next kills, to test it, but I'm pretty sure you do.

I'll do the same

It is definitely affected by your combat effectiveness vs. your opponent. The absolute range is 5-20 xp per shot. However, If you say drop your modules you will find that you are getting 5-7 xp a lot, while if you are doing well you get all over the place including the 20. I smacked someone with heavy hull after removing their att/def mods, doing pretty optimal damage, and found the average to be around 3.0 xp/en.

It appears if you "win" a round by doing more damage, you get the higher xp range. Anyone else have observations ?

I have the issue where there is 1-4 Hull left ... it's like a waste of E that could have been just awarded.

Same, or when they've got very low hull and you disable them, but you still take the full whack of damage.

And NPC's. Always 4 hull left, and a three minute wait to get enough energy to finish them.

From the data I've gathered it seems more likely to get good xp on a disabling shot but not guaranteed.

eek, this was before I came on the scene but QFT was 8 hours originally ... ouch!

Anyway...

Each attack will always give between 5 - 15 XP randomly. (base) -- It seems like 5-6 a lot more if you are the losing shot, but it is random. I think you may lose 2.5-5 xp as a loser penalty from this but I'm not sure.

If you do MORE damage (winner), you will get another 5 - 10 XP randomly as a bonus. --- exactly matches my observations (the behavior at least), I'm so happy I had the right idea.

If you disable a higher-rank ship, you will get a bonus of (up to) 20 XP, plus 1XP for every 2 ranks the ship is above you. -- yeah matches too, I noticed a roughly linear rank minus rank relation.

If you win each round (do more damage), then you will earn 10-25, however this has likely changed as I observe 7-20 actually , I believe the winner bonus has been halved for balance reasons. This yields 2.7 base xp ratio, meaning 3.1 with a NI, very close to the ~3.0 I observed with a NI on.

Sample Shots (all winning shots):
15.18.11.20.8.15.18.18.18.12.7.14.13.12.13.16.11.10.12.15.14.14.9.8.7.11.10.20.14.14.20.16 = 433 / 32 = 13.53 , which is close to (7+20)/2 = 13.5 (no NI) , divide by 5 en/shot = 2.7, as expected.
