:?: ok so i have heard and have put into practice now that if you concentrate on researching energy that you will rank up a lot faster. However i have also heard doing battle with a npc is a lot better to fighting rpc why is this so as when i try to fight npc battles i get beaten up quite a bit and get less exp from it than if i battled rpc.
All advice is welcome many thanks

At really early ranks NPCs tend to be tougher than players. The XP bonus you get from disabling the NPC, and relative ease of NPCing at higher ranks gets you good XP.

Also, if you go all energy your ship wont be strong enough to fight NPCs, and your better off finding an energy efficient mission. (Prejor chain is a good start.)

Pretty much what he said. NPCs get easier the more you rank up.

To autorank, which is what you are referring to. You need atleast 15x your rank(after buffs) in attack and you need at least 10x your rank in MAX energy and earn atleast 4:1 xp:energy ratio when npcing to rank up from the energy you get from ranking up. You need LOTS of artifact production/ph. This AP will give you ship bots and rescued prisoners. All rank points should be spent between Tactical Officers and Engineers too keep your ship in the sweet spot to rank up.

Theres quite a lot you need to learn and will take quite a while to achieve autoranking.
