If you were to use the drannik colony ship on a planet, and then rift it, would the planet still not count towards your total owned planets?

I would believe so, as upgrading a planet shouldn't do anything to it's stats like that.

So... That would be the best way to use that artifact? 3 extra planets that don't count towards your cap that no one can take?

Once you get to a certain point in the game, the planet cap becomes meaningless as it costs too much to colonize/invade planets. You'll find yourself with oodles of open planet slots with nothing worth spending 5B, 10B, 20B credits on. Developing the planets you already own via toxic purifiers, PDOs, enumeration crystals and terraformers becomes the norm after a certain point. Use your colony ships on planets you would be willing to spend your credits on and not worry about it. Rift planets that are worth rifting, not just because it doesn't count against your cap.

You could use them on a really good planet, work on the planet like you would a regular one, then rift it the same way. It would take longer but the end results would be worth it.

Yeah, I still have mine, I'm gonna save them for when I scan natural Dysons and don't want to worry about the cash to colonize them.

It might be a while...

This is what I was thinking

@Darth, I'm pretty much at that point, minus the reasons. I have almost 11 planet slots open because I just don't have anything worth taking (Scan run tomorrow, so hopefully I find some worth taking)

That would suck. Especially if you used the ship over your planet cap... I wonder if it would work like the ship when a mission adds a module directly to your ship pushing it over max decks.
