So once you stop going decks, what's a good ratio for these? I've been putting all into tacts to start off with to get my attack up. Once I reach my target attack (5k), what would be a good ratio of the two?

Well, I used all my rank-up points for engineers and then 1 engineer/2 tacts until I got to 10xRank energy with Exotics/Ballistae installed. That was just so I'd have the capability of autoranking if I wanted to. If you want to slow rank, do the reverse. If you want to stay in the middle, go half and half.

do all engineers.
Energy in this game=fun
even if u had high att, u have no energy so its not fun.
also, with alot of energy u can easily do the missions and kill npcs often enough to make ur ship uber strong
(also, if u npc, u can get nice planet boosters, which=more artis, mostly prisoners.)

I went attack, and I have been fine, I rarely go engineers, but may do soon. Autoranking is good if you have the patience to sit there clicking away... I find NPC boring, hence why I went attack, Which gives help to Invasions, PvP, Base etc...

I just do mine uniformly. I get 1k of engineers and then I get 1k of tac officers. Repeat until the GL universe burns down to its final ember.

lol depends on what you want to do. If you want to do NPCing a lot then I say go half and half. So you can kill them faster and go longer without running out of energy. If you want to PVP then go all attack. If you want to do missions a lot or become an energy trader with bases or what ever then go all out on energy.

I personally am now going all out on energy but I have all ready put in 15K+ Tacts so I'm setting good on both sides now. So pick what you want to do and what you have the most fun doing and run with it. You can all ways change later on.

a ship with kick ass defence makes base killing funnerer

am currently adding attack- in a few thousand tac's time may switch to helmsman for a bit to boost defence

have already added several thousand engineers- still add 10 a level from the levelling bonus
