i tried a bunch of log and ln equations, but didn't get anything that came close to matching like this updated power equation from excel (including Cendant's new datapoint):

y=1.08862x^0.719

but i'm sure someone can come up with something better - my last advanced math class was around 1990, so my gut feelings about logs and lns might be way off ...

I would like to point out the damage formula uses a tanh(x) function. It would not surprise me if Dan used a similar equation for scanning.

it's a nice idea, but the tanh is used so that for the majority of the 'curve', you get a linear result, but at the extremities, you can get much different numbers (looking at the curve samples of tanh functions on google).

this doesn't really work for the scan, as the more scan, the more planets, and so far, it is a pretty smooth gradient.

I don't think Dan programmed it to be X scan --> Y planets, tbh.

If I had to guess it would be like X scan with Y planets --> % chance to scan another.
For instance % chance = tanh(scan/(constant* planets))
Once the % goes to 0 it grays out.

The formula you guys are looking for has nothing to actually do with the formula for how scanning is done, but because there is potentially rounding it there won't ever be an exact formula for what you are trying for.

you may be correct, but the EFFECT is still that an X amount of scan will garner approximately Y amount of planets. there are no datapoints that skew wildly away from the curve generated in excel. so, even if the 'good' to 'very poor' range is indeed modelled with a tanh function, the overall envelope of scans will still be covered by the equation above, which is all most people will care about anyway (or maybe that's just my long-in-the-past engineering degree talking ?).

Was the scan button grayed out?

Yes :)

My point is that if the equation was say If(0.5>tanh(# planets*constant/scan), scan, gray out) then you can rewrite it to solve for the # of planets as a function of scan as such arctanh(0.5)*scan/constant = # of planets. Which is why i think the use of ln(x) or Y^X equation will not make for an accurate formula.

Thank you everyone for these numbers. There are still some large gaps though, that I wish we could fill. If someone would be willing to do so, next scan run, scan incrementally, as in start with just enough to scan a few until it grays out, add 500, scan till it grays out, once you reach 5k jump up to 7k, then once you 8k, you can add how ever much you like. I'd do this my self, but I don't have the purgers necessary.

I'm actually in the process of doing that. I've purged almost all of the planets I don't own (I hope I don't get critically hacked!) and I'm going to start as low as I can.

Currently that's with 178 planets in my database - so around 1.5k scan. I've got all the scanning mods - except that new one that costs 8k ctp (grumble, grumble) and will be slowly moving up from 1.5k to my max.

I'll only be scanning on Very Poor, and will shuffle around the mods so I'm only gaining ~5 scan until the Scan button reappears each time.

It will take a few days I think to complete the run though so if anyone else is interested, let me know.

Only 68 purgers left to accumulate before I start my run so should be in about 5 days. Anyone else doing any incremental scanning?

here's the chart using the data from the wiki page above:

Image

so, there is a bit of divergence at the higher end of the chart, but most of the gaps are in the 2k to 10k range.

going to a full logarithmic axis gets rid of most of the variation:

so, to improve the log chart, we would actually need a reset player to throw on 5 scan and see if they can grey out planet #2 or #3.

Hmmm.... Don't forget, we are getting Chloron's numbers some time. Thank you so much Chloron for doing what you're doing by the by.
