So, I was curious when assembly lines would take over emotion cores (since assembly lines increase production), and I wrote a calculator for it...

http://repl.it/azr

The breakdown is as follows:

An assembly line adds 48 RP/day when used. An emotion core on a 17xMR research planet produces 696 RP/day. All else equal, an assembly line will overtake the total RP production of the emotion core in 27 days (if the emotion core is on a 17x research planet).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DISCLAIMER: Obviously, 17xMR research planets are not necessarily the best option for utilizing the far more important +1 Artifact on an emotion core, but it was a simple example.
Any suggestions or corrections (if I calculated something incorrectly)?
How are you getting 48 research points a day from a single assembly line?
Quote:
Q-Pedd Assembly Line 3.0
Adds 1 Q-Pedd Scientist (2 research) to your crew.
Assemble line gives 2 perm research in the form of scientists.
2 research * 24 hours in a day = 2*24 = 48 research per day.
It might actually be more accurate to measure per hour (or group thereof) under the assumption that some amount of research will not be stored.
Regardless, the fundamental point is well represented. It will not take long for the perpetual growth to outdo the static amount.
The reason I didn't do that is because the assembly lines are still not "equal" once they've caught up to the emotion cores in RP/hour, since they initially are way behind a well-placed emotion core. And the only way to account for all available bonus RP from the emotion core's initial dominance is to show when an assembly line has surpassed all available RP from an emotion core.
this is manageable
So 698 VS 48
Day 1, 698 48
day 2, 1378 144
day 3 2076 288
day 4 2774 480
day 5 3472 720
day 6 4170 1008
day 7 4868 1344
day 8 5566 1728
day 9 6282 2160
day 10 6980 2640
day 11 7678 3168
day 12 8376 3744
day 13 9074 4368
day 14 9772 5040
day 15 10470 5760 ***** this is where scientest are making more per hour than the building
Day 16 11168 6528
day 17 11688 7344
day 18 12564 8208
day 19 13262 9120
day 20 13960 10080
day 21 14658 11088
day 22 15356 12144
day 23 16854 13248
day 24 17552 14400
day 25 18250 15600
day 26 18948 16848
day 27 19646 18144
day 28 20344 19488
day 29 21042 20880
day 30 21740 22320 This is where scientest win total production
so to answer your question, assuming a 30 is what you need to wait until the scientests surpass the reserch including oppertunity cost reserch, Less if you factor in that like you took a 1:1 reserch buidling off that x17 plasta to put the other on, as then it would only be a +2 net.
I would like to correct you a bit...
Assembly does not give 48 RP/day, but instead 40 RP/20 hours + 16 RP/4 hours, effectively giving 56 RP/day.
Well, that's if you really value RP that much, activating your Assembly every 20 hours precisely :P
Well, one requests that I factor in missing hourly drops (reaching the RP/cap), and another points out that I'm wasting 4 hours of cooldowns/day. You truly cannot please everyone. However, the code is all there -- if you want to experiment, go for it!
My current edit... not exactly doing what I want for 20 hour activations. I am tired. http://repl.it/bMn
