I am installing Power Conduits on my ship, and each one I install decreases my energy by five. Why is it doing this?
Help would be appreciated.

This is how conduits/relays work. They exchange max energy for energy recharge rate. You should plan to install them with reactors for balance.
Some other tips on relays:
- turn them off before you gain another rank to maximize the energy you will receive
- turn them off when spending a long time away from the game
