I just obtained my first one one via pawlacite thaw mission and used it on my largest ice planet. For some reason it's data is not updating on the list of worlds I have scanned. It is Oceanic when I click to do stuff to the world, just not on the main lists. Do I just have to wait and it'll update on it's own, or will I need to send a proper report to Dan to get it to show properly?

Yeah, the same thing has happened to me as well, OneHitPoint. I generally find that the planet list doesn't update until at least five minutes after i've used the Mass Surface Melter. Same goes for any other planet-changing devices like Quasi-Spacial Expanders. Just be patient and wait. Besides, it's actually better for it to not update; bigger or better planets attract more attention from your enemies. ;)
