Post Scanning for planets is bloody ridiculous
I love this game, and I want to say 'thanks' to everyone on this forum for all the help I've gotten from reading through it.

...But scanning is an issue that I think really needs to be addressed. I am level 22, and I had this grand plan to scan for a crap-ton of planets and then I would have my pick of what to colonize... so I equipped as much scanning power as I could, then added on top of that my Prejor Data thingy (the artifact that gives +70 scanning for 4 hours), and proceeded to burn through 150 energy in a futile attempt to scan anything whatsoever. I got nothing. My odds for finding a planet, each scan, was 23%. So, if its 23%, you would expect to find a planet around once in every five scans (with some variance, of course). I scanned 30 times... and got nothing. You don't need to be able to do statistical modeling (which I do often) to know that there is clearly something wrong here.

I apologize... my writing sounds rude and insolent -- I'm kinda peeved right now. I really do like this game a lot... can something be done about this problem?

well i think the scanning.. OK... but not the greatest.. i mean i have over 1400+ scanning... and i've found like 186 planets only and i'm not even allowed to try scanning for more because i'm at 5% chance to find.. now before more planets were added i understand not being able to find that many to be even so you can't just get ANYONE's planet you want... but since what? like another 80k was added i think the scanning also needs to be updated a little bit to find more... because the top player has scanned like 300+ planets out of 140000+... just using those 2 figures (which isn't exact) and with the tech level the first place player has, i'm guessing he has the best scanners there are.. which means he has found .2%.... a player can only find 1/5th of a percent of the total planets is a little bad considering there are so many small and crappy ones... this might of been good before the mass planet adds.. but as of right now i really don't like it either....

who knows maybe one day it will change... this game still is in beta ya know

hell after years of being released and #1 WoW still has balancing

@Inergon, before you used any temporary boosts, it's best to check the %. If its too low, research more sensors first.

EDIT: Yeah, 30 scans, 23% = 0 planets? The 23% is just an approximation. Seems like this "23%" approximation is really far off...

Are you sure you didn't forget to take the lens cap off your scanner?

Sounds like you got shafted by the odds. Keep trying as much as you can before the data disk runs out, it might even be worth popping credits for an energy refill.

I agree it needs to be adjusted but I don't think it is totally ridiculous

In my personal opinion I think the way that the planet scanning is set up rather odd. I would love to have more planets in my scan list but what I don't understand is how out of 12k planets 50 of my 200 planets already have people inhabiting them and Dan (dev) has said that 80 percent of the planets in the galaxy aren't inhabitted. This to me is an error in logic somewhere because how can you have 80 pc of the planets still un scanned and I keep finding the planets that enemies have found. Its not logical.

The reason is simple Noah ... Both you and me scanned planets when there was like 400 players only and a much less number of players ... When the game raised up to 12k players with the ads, that planet numbers didn't raise straight away so many of the planets we scanned already got taken by other players (hence the high number of ennemies planets in my planet scans)

When I did my last scan rush after Dan added lotsa new planets, I found very few planets already colonized by ennemies.

As for Inergon:

I'm fine with the planets scanning system, Planets should not be easy to find in numbers. You got bad luck with your scans at 23% but again, is it really interesting for you at your level to scan at 23% ?? I doubt it.

If you want planets, then focus you research on scans like mad and have the patience to wait for decent technology. If you go too fast you are gonna waste alot of energy.

Also you may try hacking ... I found 4 planets with hacking (out of which one is pretty interesting to conquer)
Or another strategy could be getting more artifact point to get a star chart map artifact ...

so you have 3 ways to find planets ... And you have many strategies possible to do each of them ... That's what I like in this game, trying to find the path that suits best my needs. If you hit a wall, then re think your strategy :)

Hacking may not be suitable yet as lack of cloak modules. Lower rank players usually do not put research into this, so hacking may not be a suitable route to go for now.

i'm ok with the way scanning is... but like i said in an earlier post.. even the top player has only scanned .2% of the Current galaxy... which i think is low.. i mean considering as of right now in the real world we currently actively scan 3% of outter space... so i think we should at LEAST be able to scan 3% of the galaxy.. because say i want to attack a certain player.. it's gonna be a LONG time before i find one of his planets especially if we both have the same cloaking research level

Post Re: Scanning for planets is bloody ridiculous
Look, I'm just saying that the % odds of finding a planet should not be so misleading. If it says that I have a 23% chance of finding a planet, and I scan 30 times, then I would most likely find 6 planets, plus or minus some variance -- but in this situation IF I only found 5 planets, then that puts the standard error at close to 20% -- which is already pretty bad. But since I got zero planets, then the standard error is at or above 100% -- you decide what level of error is acceptable for your model, but I say that a model that gives me 23% odds and then completely fails to deliver... is a bad model.

Should it be easier to scan for planets? Yeah, I think so... thats just my opinion. Should the percentage odds given of finding a planet be accurate (within a reasonable margin of error -- I usually go with 5% in my modeling)? Yes, and that is not an opinion. If its not reasonably accurate, then there's no point in telling us the % chances anyways.

So anyways.... since I could not find a planet I liked, I decided to try my hand at conquest. More expensive, but I think it was worth it since I got a FABULOUS planet. Back about 1 week ago, when I first started playing and did the tutorial, that tutorial told me to scan for planets -- I didn't know what I was looking at then, but the very first planet I scanned was an average-sized terra with 2x mega-rich Artifact, and 'very rich' and 'rich' in mining and research. It was already owned by a guy who was at the time around lvl 20. Fast-forward 1 week and I'm lvl 22 and he's lvl 34, and I know thats a good planet and I want it bad. I dont know if its a recent installation, or if these were there when I scanned the planet, but there are 2 Prejor Beacon Jammers on it, which makes me really really want it. So after last night's utter failure at scanning, I hatched a strategy to conquer the planet. I am amazed I got it... had to knock off the guy's ship defending the planet, which took 2 tries, and then I found that the population of the planet grows faster than my energy, even with all of my relays equipped. So, it took me a couple of hours of trying, but finally I got it. So, I wanted to brag, and say that conquering is pretty cool, and maybe taunt the poor guy I took it from -- the planet's name is Merley and its previous owner was lvl 34 (forgot his name, unfortunately) -- I got your planet, and thanks to your Prejor Beacon Jammers, you probably wont ever get it back :P

Awesomeness... but like I said above, the scanning probability needs to be improved.

I don't want to be a #*&$ but your completely incorrect. I had 100 planets with 20 people that owned 20 of the same planets. 2 days ago when I equipped the max scanners that I had researched and spent 3 energy cubes worth of energy (600 energy a pop) scanning for planets I found about 105. I know have 205. 20 of which are enemied 23 of which are allied. My point is how is it logical for me to find 43 planets (that I don't share btw) of enemies/allies when there are so many planets in the galaxy.

My logs show that you found 2 planets last night (or early this morning, however you want to look at it).

Well Noah, I believe Dan made an algorythm so that a certain % of the planets you scan are colonized already ... He specified in another post somewhere that he made things a bit spicy ... If he didn't then the game would be damn boring ...

Now if you have so many allied planets in your scans, perhaps you have too many allies ^^

Also if there are so many planets in the galaxy, it's because Dan probably aims towards much more players ... depending on his advertising strategy and the development of social features to raise the virality.

I know you made a nice scan run the other day, I witnessed it :)

my current ratio of planets is :

- 29.29 % of planets ennemy occupied
- 0.01% of planets alliance occupied

Yeah I stayed up a little longer and kept scanning. Doesn't change anything -- but thanks for taking a look Dan :)

>.< Wall o' texts burning my eyes

The only complaint I have so far with scanning is that scanners could be a little smaller, just a tad. But then again I have yet to be fuxed over by the system.

ahhh crap, he took it back.... thats gay... so much for my shiny new terra planet... I was hoping that those Prejor Beacon Jammers would hide it from him -- but apparently not. Man, that dude used all sorts of artifacts to take it from me, so he wouldnt even need to fight for it. First, a disease to kill off the inhabitants of the planet, then when I tried to attack back, some trap that did 400 damage to me. That wasn't raelly any problem, since it only costs 800 credits to fix my ship, and I promptly killed his pathetic little ship in like 3 hits (the dude is 12 levels higher than me -- 35% greater than me in level) -- but then I discover that I have to wait another 10 hours to retake the planet. I bet its gonna cost another 250,000 credits again. This sucks... After I take it back, is there anything I can do to prevent the use of that disease-artifact on it again? It wont be a problem to make the planet invincible, if I can just make sure he has to fight to reduce the population. That Engineered Virus is a real low-blow... good thing I got one of my own just a minute ago. Lock and Load, the fight ain't over!

Edit: ahh crap... somehow he got an extra 5000 defense on that planet. Obviously, an artifact I havent encountered yet... I wonder how long it will take to wear off?

umm if you TOOK it from someone.. it doesn't matter how much cloaking you put on it.. he is ALWAYS gonna see it... once you see a planet from your own scanners, captureing or conquering shared planets.. you ALWAYS see it.. UNLESs you put a flux on the planet after you conquer it.. then everyone that has seen it but you will no longer be able to find it.. unless they happen to randomly scan it again (very rare)

theres an artifact, Planet Vortex Deflector that makes you planet immune to artifacts for a day, that may help. and the artifact that hes using is an agies shield.
