They WERE. They aren't now, because Gargamel finally caught enough of them to turn them into gold. Unfortunately for the smurfs, their population was evenly divisible by six.



Evolution suggests the Egg did. As proto-chickens laid eggs, each generation came closer to what we would call 'chicken'. Thus, a proto-very-nearly-chicken laid a chicken egg. From which hatched the first chicken. Ergo the egg came first.

Of course, the question doesn't ask about CHICKEN eggs. And eggs as a reproductive strategy, have long predated chickens.


For further answers to your questions, please pick up the phone, dial 911, explain you have a concussion, then bang your head into the wall until you do.

"What came first the chicken or the egg?" Is a philosophical question asked to find the root of your belief.
If you answer "the chicken came first" you are rooted in the belief that God created all animals in the first week.
If you answer "the egg came first" you are rooted in the belief of evolution that genetic mutation and breeding brought about a hybrid bird that we now call chicken.

Though as a society we understand and accept evolution, there are people out there who still firmly believe in God and that chickens are chickens, always have been always will be.

Not my place to judge (though judging others is fun) I go with the egg personally.

In any event technically either answer is correct based on the fact that the question is asked to define your understanding of creation.
