Many high-level players are finding that they are simply running out of stuff to do. Dan's been adding the new content of Planet Events and Blockades lately, but they all share a common problem:
You can't actually *do* anything!
Yes, if a blockade ship appears, you can shoot it down (I've had two), but if you don't have a blockade ship, there's nothing you can do to get one, no way that the feature affects you at all. The entire feature is basically just 'hope the RNG spawns one for you, otherwise do nothing.' That... isn't a game.
Bases added something on which you could take direct action - build them up, fight them, defend them - a totally solid and excellent addition to the game. And that's the sort of thing it needs to keep it fresh. 'Get excited for five seconds, then do nothing for two weeks' content is easy to build, but not something that's going to keep people playing.
Game-sustaining content *has* to let the players take meaningful action over an extended period - formulate strategies, hoard resources, form alliances, *plan ahead and be thinking about it!* Half the fun of a game like this is thinking ahead to what you'll do tomorrow, watching the next steps in your plan unfold, or reacting as your careful plans get dashed. Random events just don't provide anything like that.
