These suggestions are meant purely for looks and are not intended for actual gameplay advantage.

Shield and hull designs:

Basically, I highly doubt that every shield and hull has the same look to them, so basically you can choose the hull and shield color from the list of modules you have. (ie nexus armor would give a red tint to your ship whilst choosing kalvium plating would make it slightly green or obviation would be goldish and a T.O. shield generator would be the classic blue). I know someone's gonna say 'well they'll know what mods you have even if they can't see them', to which I say true and false.
True: Only if you have one mod there
False: if you have more than one.
And it's the player's choice as to what hull/shield design they want.


Planetary designs:

Let's face it, the mini-image of planet shields make it clearly visible and yet on the planet they are not. Same goes for minefields (yes I know mines aren't that big). We can see what's on it anyway on the list, so why not on the larger image of the planet itself?


Deck progression:

It makes sense that the bigger our ships get, the more detailed/complicated the hull would get. So why does the Dark Smuggler Chassis make your Galaxy Destroyer look like a tiny fighter? This one wouldn't be that hard. Make the details go on top of the ship image as you progress, say, every 250 - 500 decks? We can see the ship size anyway so why not make it visual.


Race avatar:

Simple, make it customizable through rare npc drops, GP items and/or missions. Add visors, scars, hair styles (for humans/zolazin) and possibly the other gender of each race.


Base:

Same as hull/shield. Different tiers of them should be visible (since we can see them on the list anyway) and possibly making some of the special mods visible on the base itself.


Damage:

Going back to the realistic aspect, a disabled ship would not have a brand-spanking new polished hull. There would be decks missing, atmosphere venting and debris. Not saying make it get worse as you go along (because there are some who could use that to figure out the hull strength without seeing the hull mods itself) but at least make it more satisfying to disable that one prick by turning their ship into an actual wreck.

Had to read the post to see if you misspelled "aesthetics" or "athletics" :mrgreen:

Anywaaaaay.... I'm all for aesthetic customization, but I'd prefer Dan be spending his coding time on stuff to do. New missions, new NPCs, new dynamics, etc. Even new research would be a welcome addition.

i dont really care about any of the other stuff but this is something i would love to see

Yeah, I think that some visual upgrades would be great. New content is better, but all of this would be fun to add in, and might just attract more players who like the flashy images.

I'm going to get a titanium hull and set it as my design, just for the laughs and repeated badge attempts.
