Post subject:  Moar Contested Planets Please !

Dan has had this in mind for over 2 years now, but we have yet to see any additional contested planets after Exotica.

what we have now:
Exotica: VL exotic planet, 11x mining, 9x arti, 10x research
- unlocked by mission: Ruler of Exotica
- owner rewards: if held for 8 hours, King of the Hill 2.0 medal and weapon Exotic Bio-Disruptor
- legion rewards: ability Exotica's Influence - adds to base production: 1% + 1% for each 4 hours (down from 24 hours) that the planet has been controlled (up to a max of 10%).
- restrictions: can not be re.invaded by anyone who has already received the King of the Hill 2.0 medal

contested planets characteristics:
- can not be abandoned
- contested stacking debuff atk / def -20% per day
- requires legion loyalty to invade
- can not guard if disabled by a player in the last hour
- guards removed if owner leaves legion
- Halcyon Trap, Halcyon Aura, and Calming Amplifier effects are automatically removed from guards when targeted from the planet

so, i am thinking about ideas for new contested planets. i think an 'easy' way to unlock new ones would be to have 1 for each profession, so 14 more contested planets. each contested planet would also be available for, and guardable by, anyone who has ever been that particular profession.

the legion reward of base production would be the same for all of them, but with different planet types (all VL, with the same richness as Exotica), owner rewards, and restrictions on re.invasion. if a legion can only own 1 contested planet at a time, that should make for some nice variety.

so that is the structure that i am proposing and i am looking for ideas for combinations of owner rewards and re.invasion restrictions for each profession. here are my initial thoughts:

profession: planet type, owner rewards, re.invasion restrictions

Biologist: barren, ??, once every 50 planets colonized
Builder: ecumenopolis, ??, once every 200 decks added
Excavator: volcanic, ??, once every 25,000 npc's killed

Explorer: terra, ??, once every 5000 scans performed
Fixer: crystal, ??, once every 750 players killed
Governor: gaia, all planetary effects (other than moons) double in effectiveness, once every 100 missions completed

Guard: oceanic, ??, once every 50 planets conquered
Hacker: icy, 3x chance of a critical hack, once every 1000 hacks
Merchant: desert, any bids you make in the GTC can not be outbid, once every 200 successful bids in the GTC

Miner: metallic, ??, once every 5000 increase in mining per hour
Physicist: plasma, 10x proceeds from research contract, once every 100 krionite torpedos absorbed
Raider: gas, every raid is a critical raid, once every 1000 raids

Saboteur: toxic, destroys 2 planetary buildings in sabotage attacks, once every 2000 engineers
Spy: aphotic, planetary cloak doubled, once every increase in 100 planets found

previous contested planet suggestions for reference:
07mar2014: factional contested planets each with varying benefits and penalties

05mar2014: more contested planets unlocked via mission chains; legions have to hold multiples to get bonuses

01may2013: contested star which requires tasks to be completed when owned to avoid getting disabled by the star

28mar2013: legion mission to unlock contested planet; guard thrown off at random every 30 minutes

12dec2012: various contested planets, each with rank level caps so only certain ranges of ships can attack

02aug2012: mutually exclusive contested planets

just sent this suggestion in to Dan, so i thought i'd post it here as well:

repeated suggestion that anyone with the Exotica medals not be allowed to guard Exotica (and an 4.hour guard cooldown would be welcome as well).

2 additional contested planets, that are mutually exclusive with Exotica (if one is in legion, you can not invade another):

1. a decent dyson planet
> unlock via daily mission chain restricted to over rank 1000 - so low ranks can't use for show and tell medal
> medal awarded after invading 10x (same medal restriction for guarding)
> gives no legion production buff

2. a very tiny barren planet
> unlock via mission at rank 10
> resource stats randomized after every invasion - medal awarded when all resource stats line up at the same richness.
> gives double the legion production buff that Exotica provides

other previous thoughts:

aug2018: Exotica debuff apply to guards, additional Exotica production boosts to guards; guarding cooldown from 1 hr to 8 hrs

jan2017: contested planets associated with round 1 legion missions

No need. Can't be alerted so it can't be used for show and tell.

I think you should come up with another requirement for that. I can't know for sure, but it's unlikely that past race and profession choices have ever been tracked outside of individual medals. Besides, even if you could extrapolate information from these medals (which you really shouldn't) it's not even accurate because all of them require a profession and another condition to flag progression on them, thus if you've been a profession but not met the other condition then the medal will never "know" that you were that profession.

I think a better idea is to allow guarding only if you've ever controlled it. This, at first, sounds crazy, but it'll make the planet very hard to keep a hold of, and thus very contested. There will be lots of people going for it and keeping it will be a struggle to manage on your own or with very few guards. This is quite the contrast to the 2+ month stints that people are holding Exotica for right now and I actually think it's quite a healthy thing.

I disagree with only allowing a legion to control one contested planet at any given time. Controlling one planet allows you to pile every available guard onto that one planet. If a legion tries to go for two contested planets, they'll have to split guards between them, and even more-so for additional contested planets. I fully expect that legions will want to try and control as many contested planets at once (bragging rights, obviously), so it will in a way self-regulate.

Of course, just switching guards between the currently attacked planets would be an easy way to counter this, so there would need to be some sort of mechanism in place to prevent it - perhaps not being able to guard a contested planet if you've started guarding one within the last hour or two. In fact, you could probably replace the "can't guard if recently disabled" mechanic with this. This provides an good opportunity for coordination and strategy between legion members, something the game lacks outside of Clusters and similar elites/bosses.

I don't think there should be as many. Having 14 contested planets is a bit extreme when right now there is only 1. Make it 4 or 5 new planets, and slap them into the rewards of a new mission chain. Hell, make it a continuation of the Exotica chain, and if we ever want more all that's required is adding a new mission to the chain. I wouldn't like to see it be 1 mission rewarding a contest planet location after another, though. Perhaps a series of missions that builds up to "finding the special planet we've been looking for".
