Just wondering if splitting research points will become available?
E.G. When I wake up I could have 25k worth of research which would go into 1 research tier...
Would it be possible to split this so you could research 2 or tiers at the same time?

At the moment i'm researching the base tier but would also like to put some of that 25k into energy or weapons or both....

You don't always have to put it into one thing. Put in one one time, one the next, its kinda less productive though, and its a better idea to do one at a time.
