what would you do with this second ship? what would be the point?
right now we can instantly warp ourselves to any point in the galaxy, instantly collect all our resources, and instantly run insane missions... not to mention instantly being totally repaired after your ship is totally destroyed!! now if there was a concept of galaxy size and a wait time between actions... then maybe i can see a reason for controlling multiple ships... or if there was some sort of limit as to the number of crewmembers per ship size.... or something... i dunno... but right now???
Please explain a legitimate reason for needing a second ship given the current game mechanics, because I can't think of one at the moment.

The idea of having a second ship (or more) would be good for guarding planets, since 1 ship can only guard 1 planet.
There are some good ideas here, no matter what troll comes to try to kill the creative thinking, keep up the brainstorming and be open to other ideas, that's how all great concepts come into being.
