In the Energy research branch, there are Cores and Relays. Relays decrease the time it takes for your energy to recharge. The better the relays, the faster you charge. You start off getting 1 energy every 3 minutes (1 tick). The MAX speed you can recharge (via relays, FATHERs from the GP store, and Mission tier rewards) is 1 energy every 30 seconds.
