webguydan wrote: We've been thinking about doing this for a bit. I like the direction of the ideas - we'll definitely be adding a system like this to the game Nice My thoughts on some different achievement subsections (some name ideas for individual achis in brackets): Rank based: 20 (a brave new ship), 50 (getting to grips with it), 100 (hitting a century), 250, 350 (Now, things get tough), 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, etc Disables, Hacks, Raids, Invasions... pretty standard. Critical hacks - BOTH WAYS ("Map-nabber" for success, "I could read your database like a book" for failures/crit hacks against) Crew deaths - ("How NOT to do it", "Suicide run", "It's your funeral - not mine", etc) Ship class increases Pacifist/Victim - Days without performing any offensive actions/being killed and not retaliating. Planet Scans Planets purged - ("You purged HOW MANY?!?!", "Ungrateful" Mission-Orientated - Missions completed, not finished. NPC kills - for elites/bosses, total kills, AND faction based kills (eg "Stryll Stalker" - Kill X stryll ships. "Crimson Conqueror", "T.O. TerrOrizer") Some "Crazy" achievements: Radio silence - Don't post a comm to ANYONE for a month. Lone Wolf - Spend X days without a legion (total) Focussed - FINISH a mission without spending ANY energy on ANYTHING else except that one mission (weeklies would make this up for people who've done everything already) Untouchable - Days passed without being disabled Wall-o-Fire - Days passed without being hacked Trap-u-lous - Within 1 week, trigger 100 ship traps and don't put up a single ship trap of your own. Just some ideas. I think achievements would have to be tier based, then specialist. For example: PvP disables: Wood-10 Bronze-50 Silver-200 Gold-500. After gold, you get separate, more specialised titled achievments, eg Exterminator-1000

I realize some stats aren't really tracked all that well, but as you say scans, disables, etc would be pretty easy to implement.

Another question would be if we start from scratch, or if the stuff we've already done counts towards the achievement.

dan could use this idea to promote slow ranking in some cases
and for the ones that are easy to earn, they should be hidden achievements (ie: achievements that one doesn't know about)

And when you reach 10 000 NPC kills you get the achievement (and maybe a sub title) "Droid Crusher"...

i like the idea of achievements, but rather than an achievement-oriented award (which seems kind of redundant - you just killed 1000 npc's - here's a killing bauble, go kill some more now !), you could just get an achievement badge. that way, instead of just becoming focused on a single 'chain' of achievements (which the current badges already reward), there is a benefit to a more balanced approach. the rewards should be generally useful, like the mission rewards, but scale up exponentially in cost - that should take care of any concern that longer-term players would gain excessively in the retroactive awarding of achievements. i also like the idea of keeping unearned achievements a mystery to encourage exploring all facets of the game - an achievements page would just list off the earned achievements along with the total number of available achievements. a behind-the-scenes achievement 'tree' where the prerequisites are all mish-mashed would also be very sneaky fun

Face facts... there won't be any mystery achievements because as soon as one person hits it, that achievement will be posted in the Pub and shortly afterwards added to the Wiki...

I think the best way to "show" unachieved achievements is by showing just a picture and the text to the picture would say ?????. This would make you search for these achievements rather than just focus on getting them. Also, if the achievements are to be posted in the Pub or at the wiki you got a choice if you want to "cheat" or if you want to try to figure them out yourself...

I think that migt make it a little bit boring, actually. If you must do one achievement first before you can go on to the next, then you might get bored of trying to get this achievement. Like for instance I'm a NPC dude that goes on NPC hunts, but if i had to do 1k hacks before i could get the NPC achievement i would loose my mind Takes forever to get that many, when you start with 0... And i still think that all achievements should be hidden, just a picture (faded with gray) and a text underneath saying ???? untill you discover it. You don't have to look in the Pub or at the wiki, that is just optional
