We really need these, I think; more important than gettings loads of high scan values. fixed it The sign initially mean 1 to ~500, but I see your point.

These results are very very interesting. Definitely provides a better insight as to how scanning works.
However, to get those numbers between 1 and 500 scan, we'd need a player who does a reset to get the numbers.

Seeing as it seems to be a linear relationship (for the most part), I think we ought to take a look at the interval we're getting between minimum scan values for each planet. This usually seems to be in the range of [5, 10].

Some more scan results (a few less today - only about 2.8k energy spent this time) I was mostly looking at points I had already on my scan/planet list and trying to fill in about 3-4 around them to ensure they were accurate.
Scan . . Planets 5140 . . 475 5160 . . 476 5170 . . 477 5320 . . 487 5335 . . 488 5340 . . 489 5360 . . 490 5379 . . 491 5380 . . 492 5400 . . 493 5420 . . 494 5435 . . 495 5440 . . 496 5460 . . 497 5480 . . 498 5485 . . 499 5500 . . 500 6100 . . 541 6120 . . 542 6140 . . 543 6150 . . 544 6160 . . 545 6180 . . 546 6200 . . 547 6205 . . 548 6220 . . 549 7235 . . 616 7240 . . 617 - Will be picking up here tomorrow.

(Scan + 560)/12
Equation I took a fairly random guess at. I'll do a scatterplot to see how accurate it is.
EDIT
It wasn't accurate. I'll do a few of these and try to make them gradually more accurate.
(Scan + 300) / 8 Was surprisingly accurate from scan values of 500 to 600.
I think though, as it seems consistent, we should be looking for ( Scan + x ) / y Where x / y gives us the average interval between each minimum scan value. Unfortunately, this interval seems to vary greatly as we increase scan size so I might be barking up the wrong tree.

Linear: Power Series: Logarithmic (needs values below 500 scan): Polynomial: COMBO (next 2 graphs) of Power series to 3500 scan: AND Linear after 4400 scan: thus closer Rsquared gets to 1.00, the better the fit.

thanks for gathering all this info Chloron ! too bad you missed the scan for 501, that would've been the exact minimum for the medal

I wonder if any of this is affected by how the game rounds?

thanks for gathering all this info Chloron ! too bad you missed the scan for 501, that would've been the exact minimum for the medal there appears to be a 15-20 number increase for each planet to be scanned. so for planet 501 you'd need around 5515 scan.

I can confirm this. Had some legion alerts just before doing a scan run this morning so I looked at it to see. The number shown on the Planetary Scan window (Planets Discovered) was less then the total number of planets on the Planets tab. In fact right now I'm showing 298 planets on the planet tab but only 296 for the planets discovered number on the scan window. So I would have to conclude that alerted planets do not count when scanning.

The scan power required for the eye of the universe medal is close to 5500. I had just over 5600 scan when I received the medal with 502 planets scanned. I have since removed my scanners and it has been a long time since I actually did the actual scan. I was allowed to scan for more planets but my goal was to get the medal so a scan of 5600 is maxed just over 502 planets.
I can redo the scanning run, will take a bit to be able to afford the scanners themselves though. I can post the actual amount of planets I can get with a specified scan power.
Also I was able to scan 465 planets with 5300 to 5400 scan. Just to let you know.
