Disruption Field = 25kRP/tier = 5.05 shields/deck
Whipple Plating = 3,600RP/tier (or there about)= 5 hull/deck

Seriously. I didn't know Whipple plating was so efficient!

:)

EDIT: Fixed RP costs.

titanium is 1000
whipple is 3600

generally speaking, hull is more efficient than shield, though it needs to be repaired manually

Sorry for forgetting how much research it is. It was a LONG time ago, and I didn't think to look on wiki.

The point is Disruption fields are ALOT further down the line than whipple plating.

but the problem is, once you get maximum efficiency of hull, it's costs alot to repair, while shields recharge.

that's exactly why hull is more efficient than shields... manual repairs as opposed to automated/free 2% repair every charge cycle

but repair has a timer, which can be annoying.

tell me about it... i can drop 10K hull in under 10 seconds in Chrome... but waiting 5 minutes for a full repair is better than waiting between 36 and 100 minutes (depending on your shield charge rate) for a full shield recharge

so you get more per space AND you can restore it faster
(that's why we recommend hull to newbies!!)

Let's not forget that you will need a healthy supply of minerals/hr in order to fix your hulls all the time. Good thing is that cost to repair stops at 200 million.

good thing too... 5 perfect syncopated plating add 133M to your 5 minute repair cost for a fully disabled ship

So yes or no, is it worth researching shield tech or not?

Researching the Shield Systems tree is an absolute must, if for nothing else, to enhance your planetary defenses.

Fair enough point, never even thought about it as tactically as that.

You can repair hull, it doesn't repair itself like a shield.
Timers? Repair Nanodrones don't believe in them ;)
I have no shields, just X-Charge Cells, and run at 325 shields with a 275 per hour recharge rate.

Exactly.... and until well over 3000 decks it is for nothing else but that.
