As you can see here, there are said to be several viable options.

Slow ranking is great. At just rank 59 I'm at 695 player kills and I'm currently working on singularity launchers. I love slow ranking.

As Anna pointed out from the Wiki, there are good choices. I have been a Sillixx Explorer from the start of my game (1 1/2years ago). Bigger ship just made sense to me since I was needing more space to be able to both hack AND survive the counter attack (so cloak and hull/def). The Explorer made sense as a cheap alternative to scanning modules. Here again, this allowed me to attack higher ranked ships (for more research points) early on without fear of being shot down.

Slow ranking seems appropriate if you want good pvp stats. You can overtech for your rank, crew up on prisoner drops, and beat the crap out of lower rank players. I'm not a pvp'er, I'm in it long enough to get the modules them I'm over it. But it is much easier to get those badges at a lower rank.

The only reasons to rank up fast are planet slots and relatively easier matched npcs (their health and difficulty is relative to rank^0.5 , and that's easier to obtain the required attack at higher ranks). But once you are higher rank, you get a bunch of undesirable and irritating pvp, with constant traps and people with inexhaustible supplies of artifacts, that take longer to kill and really I lost interest by the time badges came out.

If your fun factor in this game is pvp, then please slow rank. It gets really tedious at higher ranks.

Well said BinaryMan. Thanks for comments from sucha high rank!

You reminded me of something too. I am not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but also if you rank too fast, you may outrank your ability to get the afore mentioned planets. What I mean to say is, you may have the slots open, but no "worthy" planets to fill them with. I have heard several mid to high ranks talk about how much their colonization/invasion costs are and how many planet slots they have open.

Please, keep the debate flowing!
