I've been playing for a bit and ive noticed one thing the hacking system could use some new things, most normal hackers are used as to put it bluntly badge farms by other players because they lack any real means to fight and also when someone gets a notice that they have been hacked they normaly respond in overly agressave manners, so seeing this ive got some ideas that came to mind from looking over the forums idea #1 a successful hack should not give a option for you to target the hacking ship i mean really what hacker leaves a calling card to back trace them with?
To balance that a failed hack will give away the player allowing a counter attack same as if the hacker sets off a firewall trap, the victim whos trap was set off would know who did it and thus be able to counter attack doing. This would alone balance the pvp and make the hackers far less likely to just be sat on and badge farmed by the stronger players as it would make the ship builds where they just put alot of cannons, hulls, and defence mods on there ship risky to hackers attacking them also this would open up a whole new layer in the game of electronic warfare to the game and put more diversity to the game.
Also maybe put in a hacking mod for your ship that you have to go thru a mission chain that requires you to have a very very high hacking skill to finish it that would allow a hacker to cause a "critical overload" in the ship at a cost of useing 30 energy you can damage the victim ship by how much energy they have stored in there ship by a ratio of 1 energy to 2 points of damage, granted this would be very bad in terms of energy use to damage and the victim wouldnt lose any energy. But to make it more fair unlike a normal attack the overload attack would alert them to whos doing it but it would offer more variety in pvp combat and level the playing field so everyone can have a fighting chance not just the ones who go pure attack ablity. (sorry for the long post but it was a long idea please give me your feed back on it)

meh i know it needs a bit of polishing its just the unholy spawn of a few hours of playing GL and brainstorming. Granted the overload idea would mainly just be a way to soften up a enemy in use with the bypass item and to get that ship mod. I would figure you would need to have a mission that you have to have a outstanding hacking record as well as a very high cloak in order to get as well as a cool down heck it might not even have to be a ship mod could be a job skill.

Definitely with you on the overload and tracing, should also lessen or eliminate the cool down (since there is none for disable) 1+

I went on a hacking spree not too long ago and went all the way up to about 50 actions against me. Now, I did get a few counterattacks, but by and large, it went unresponded to as well. Certainly no alerts. Further, I found that because I had all this cloaking, fewer ships actually disabled me. In short, I think there are already benefits to hacking.

I get more then a couple of disables a day normally anyways... while some people did disable me in response to the hack, not being visible on the BT meant I got fewer disables overall anyways.

so you change your set up when your not hacking? also the pure combat builds rarely if ever even get attacked most other players are to scared off by the stats the idea i put forward is sound even if it needs a bit of polish to it

Ok, first.... You expect to take research points that I have paid for in time, credits and energy to colonize the planets (be it research planets or artifact planets to draw androids), or possibly a planet from my scan list and I CAN'T attack you back??? Big -1 there buddy.

Second, a pure hacking build is one of the worst strategies there is. The amount of research you gain is negligible compared to what your normal production should be. Maybe 1 in 20 you get a planet and 1 in 20 of those you get a planet worth taking. All at the risk of getting smacked around by someone because your ship is armed with BB guns and your defenses are a sheet of cardboard. You want a balanced ship. Think about it this way... If you stack all kinds of cloak on your ship, who's going to see you on the battle tab? Not the people with comparable rank... The ones who will be able to see you are the ships that are higher rank, more decks usable for scan mods and weapons. In short, people that can crunch you like a bug and there's very little you can do about it.

I'm nearing rank 500 and don't recall EVER being disabled for a BT hack. I've been hacked back, but not disabled. I can kill pretty much anybody on my BT, and hack about half of them too. I have over 600 kills, with a +377 kill/death ratio, and have over 1000 hacks (#49). All with a BALANCED ship build.

Darth if you noticed my idea made it so you can detect someone who trys to hack you. Namely raseing your scan/cloak to high enough levels to make a hack fail or if you dont wish to do that just use firewall traps to catch them some of the time also i didnt say anywhere that you would lose energy the overload attack would be a one use per hack hit that would damage you by how much energy you have in your reactor at the moment. The hacker would have to invest much time into getting the ship mod as well as the energy per use of it would be very impractical to fight with only that its a idea to soften up the pure pvp builds so someone with a more balanced or somewhat passave build could stand a ghost of a chance. It would also add more depth to a somewhat shallow combat system where the one who wins is just the one who can take the most hits over the head this would make a whole new way to fight as well as make people want to play more so they dont get caught with a overly full reactor.

The yellow bolded part is what I was referring to... Forget you wrote that?

Why would I bother with someone who FAILED a hack? They didn't get anything and I didn't lose anything. To set off a Firewall trap you have to have a SUCCESSFUL hack.

As for your "critical overload" idea, I can GUARANTEE I will zero you out if you do that to me, as I'm sure a majority of other players will as well.

I don't know of anyone that farms a player for a BT hack. This whole idea is starting to sound to me like you've got a crap ship, hacked someone just a little too much and are now getting stomped on by him and/or his legion.

Personally i like the idea. i also went on a small hacking spree here lately, only 60 hacks but in the matter of 2 days i was alerted 3 times disable 12 + legion disables. and i am on the low scale i am only lvl 89 so this idea at least from where i am standing is a good one +1

just because you don't agree with an idea really isn't a reason to try and take personal shots

He has no reason to take personal shots, he isn't taking them and I bet that he's also right on the money. Hack at your own risk.

Exactly. Too often I have seen low rank people come on here with "wonderful" suggestions to "improve" or "balance" the game because they're getting their butt handed to them because of a bad ship.

I would think that the advise/opinion of an experienced player who PvP's AND hacks would garner a bit more appreciation. Its a BAD idea, and only BAD things would come of it at ALL ranks. If you want to be a dedicated hacker, go for it, be my guest. But don't try to push advantages for a SPECIFIC type of player. There are positives and negatives to every type of specific ship build. If you go heavy into weapons and defense, you're more than likely going to be an easy hack target. If you go scan and cloak to be a hacker, you're ship is more than likely going to get disabled very easy. That's called balance.

Having said that Darth, some people may start to think that a ship that is fully balanced is the key to a decent ship, from my experience, this is not so ( other experieces may differ of course ;) ). Although you have all the types covered ( scan, cloak def, hull, attack) you'll be able to do everything but not very well due to the amount of decks you'll need to install everything. I recently had to rethink my ship specs as i was originally having everything covered, but found my ship overall was weak because those who could install more of a module type had an advantage over me as i had to equip the modules that were a tier lower because of the restricted deck space i suffered. i have now since changed my spec and doing far better in PvP, still getting the odd disable here and there and the occasional successful hack but i seem to be getting disabled less than what i used to :)

LONG TERM a balanced ship is best. But until you can get there due to deckspace or research or credits, your ship is going to suffer in one way or another. That's the reality of the game. I agree, at lower levels going for a fully balanced ship isn't the best way to go. You just need to realize that by going one route first, be it attack/defense or scan/cloak, you're going to suffer a bit on the other end. That's what balances out the different styles and the sooner low levels realize that and stop trying to shift the balance to suit them, the better. Believe me, I did my time shifting modules in and out as well and I still haven't reached the balance point.

i agree on not doing a balanced ship in the early levels. i restarted my account 2 times before i found a comfortable spec because of that ( and race/ profession ) and i only recently changed my spec in the mid 100's and have since then began to benefit from it. At my earlier levels i struggled against some people because they out classed me in certain tech areas because i was too focused on a balanced ship hence i had 2 restarts, i didn't want to restart a third time because i have came too far to restart now. maybe I'll restart my account next year once i get bored and wanna start again :)
