Oh sweet irony. The level of posts for this type of thing keeps increasing, indicating something is broken in the GL universe huh ? After rank based credit rewards were removed now the only benefit of rank that I can think of is # of planets. And after some point even that doesn't matter since the cost to colonize becomes ridiculous (some people at > 30b for a colonize) so further planet growth is limited.

instead of trying to count the beneficial effects of levelling, let's count the detrimental effects:

#1... higher level means your damage cap might be potentially higher
#2... higher level means losing access to certain npc drops
#3... higher level means running out of things to do and different things to attack

yes, people want to stop levelling
anyone beyond level 450 has probably thought at least once about quitting
