How about an arena...where you can choose who you want to battle....one on one, two on one or however you choose it. With or without artifacts, with or without repairs, however you want the battle to ensue. Where you can find out once and for all who between your friends...or foes...is strongest? You issue the challenge...doesn't mean the one challenged has to accept but if they do then you meet in the arena. Kinda like..."Thunder dome". Just a thought....does anyone agree? Anyone have any better ideas or ways to better mine?

Just a few questions.

Will kills and deaths be counted in your stats? If they do, will being disabled in the arena still remove one from all your actions?
Will you gain experience?
Will you gain badges? If you can, what's to stop someone with a friend who doesn't mind dying a lot from having their friend remove all modules and give them one hit badges twice a day?

RigorMortis....good point....no the battles here should not count...what happens in the arena...stays in the arena. Your right and it would be too easy to set up for badges and to get yourself on the leaders board so anything in the arena is just that....a straight out battle to see who is the baddest.

Sammo...I would oh so hand you yer arse...on a silver platter even just to make you feel special!!! Like you feel when ya ride the short bus!!!

then i think we should get some kind of reward but we have to kill different people to get it
or u can only battle your friends once a week and then it will count then

perhaps give the participants a choice package of arti's to use , and can only use , during the arena

more wins = better package ?

first arena rank you get an ancient crystal foci
second you get an ancient crystal foci and a grid console
third....foci, grid , obelisk
fourth... you get the point

I like it. As a play on RigorMortis' post, something like this shouldn't be counted in k/d stats or badges mainly for the reason stated in the third question and also, a 2 on 1 battle wouldn't be fair cuz it would give both of the ones on the team a kill. Also, I was thinking this idea would make more sense if it were like a Tournament style "Thunder Dome" with rank ranges. It would keep people from using their friends cuz it would be randomized and with certain restrictions in different ones for people to choose their preferred handicap, so it would still be like your originally posted idea.

Since I'm so good at being the dream-squisher.... This basic concept has been suggested MANY times before, and its still POINTLESS. Here's why:

(1) Unequal ship builds-Stronger ship wins all the time.
(2) Equal ship builds-At the mercy of connection speed (faster click speed wins) or the randomness of the damage calculations (lucky RNG wins)
(3) With artifacts-I can Cage your nerfs, CM your buffs and keep attacking you unbuffed faster than you can spam nerfs at me. (I win)
(4) Without artifacts-See #1 and #2.

If you think everything through then you won't know the fun in the unknown so to speak.

Choosing your preferred handicap could keep you from going against someone you don't want to go against cuz you think they have a better ship build than you do and nerfing and caging is already done now, a little stability in fights wouldn't or shouldn't be much different.

Like I said, if this were implemented as a tournament, normally the stronger ship build wins but people still try it anyway, just a thought.

No it doesn't because there are too many variables involved in determining how strong a ship is. Lower defense can be balanced by higher shield and hull for example

Look, I really don't like being negative on ideas. But the fact remains that this sort of thing gets suggested at least monthly and has never been given serious consideration by the development team. Here's a link to just the topics containing the word "Arena" from the forum search: Arena. That goes back quite a ways, and doesn't include any of the other multitude of threads on this same concept that don't have "arena" in the title. I'm an experienced player and an experienced forum user. I've seen countless suggestions get massive support until one person (not always me) that looks at the bigger picture says "wait a sec..."

Right now, PvP is essentially broken. At low ranks it's nothing but farm, farm, farm. At high ranks it's nothing but trap, trap, wait till they're offline, trap, kill. An arena setting teaches newbs absolutely nothing about the realities of PvP, nor does it give "veterans" practice for the realities. So creating one would be a massive programming effort for no game benefit. If it were created, it would be (at best) a fad. A handful of hardcore PvPers would use it for about a week, find out how worthless it is, then not bother with it anymore. Major waste of time for Dan when there are much bigger issues to fix and much more beneficial ideas to incorporate.
