Not suggesting we should be able to reset the configuration totally, but I think it may be useful to trade in crew, cargo or deckspace for RP to spend elsewhere. Obviously there needs to be a downside to stop people doing it often, say a 5 to 1 return (so trade 5 decks or 10 TOs for one RP). It would give people who have made mistakes in their build correct them, and also give some sort of use to the MSPs and shipbots when the higher rank players have an unusably high deck and cargo.

No. You specifically mentioned MSPs and Ship bots among the high ranks. That alone is reason enough to -1 this idea.

5 MSP = 300 cargo
1 RP = 5 cargo
5 MSP = 60 RP
/5 = 12
12 RP = 24 TOs

People would be adding hundreds of attack points every day just by converting MSPs.

Hmmm, put like that, it does seem daft, but I am only just short of rank 200 so can only see things as they appear to me now. I am barely seeing one MSP every few days

Maybe it could still work just with a different ratio. A shipbot is 2 decks, so with a ratio of 10 to 1, that would still be like changing 5 shipbots into 1 crew. Same with cargo, perhaps 50 to 1 or even 100 to 1.

The other caveat could be that crew over and above deck size starts to use up cargo space, so you wouldnt want to reduce them too much. Again, no idea what the sort of numbers are at higher levels. Is it normal to have less crew than deck space, or should it be 1 deck to 2 crew or something before it starts to use cargo?

I've got 40k crew with just 5k deck space, thats an 8:1 ratio, and that increases by anywhere from 200-400 a day(prisoners/helmsman/scientists/ranking up). If we had to make room in cargo for crew, we'd all be greatly screwed once we started getting really good crew numbers.

Ouch... guess I have a long way to go.

I still think there is something worthwhile to the suggestion but I can see how it may be difficult if not impossible to make it relevent at all ranks.

this would be good if it was only useable on used rank points and not rescued prisoners etc

and especially , you mentioned mistakes, that means you cant have ALOT on the wrong crew or decks spent

so the price should be high , HIGH and NOT trade able and the price should increase very much each time you do it , example we are taking days as the price

first 5 points is 3 days
next 5 6 days
next 5 12 days
next 5 24 days
next 5 48 days
next 5 96 days

so it can only be used for "mistakes" , at about 50 points redone you have to wait a year for the next 5 , something like that is reasonable

but not being able to turn mass storage pods into tactical officers , then some peple will have at rank 10 over 50,000 attack after a while

or some formula like x times done * (200% - times done*5%)
