You unlock it by using 47.4 million research points for technologies or CT lab attempts (combined). Once unlocked, you are able to "sell" your research points for credits. The rate is 25,000 credits per research point. Research Contract

Why would we want to trade research for credits? I'd rather do vice-versa.

Upkeep, upgrades, planet colonizing/invading, ship repairs, etc. Once you have all the research done, or at least as much of it as you feel you need, what are you going to do with your research points?

Hi Darth , he's probably a new player, research is important at the low ranks. StealthHunter as you ascend up the ranks and research tree, Researched technologies become less and less useful. Eventually people like Darth Flagitious have completed the entire research tree. The number of modules you unlock with research is finite however, it takes a long time to finish the tree, maybe 1 or 2 years depending on your production.

yep I've been done with the research tree for a while. Not only that but the extra 1.3B creds an hour from research is a huge help since planets start costing a ton at higher ranks. It will take a while if your a low rank yet so I wouldn't worry about it to much as of yet.
