It would actually be good for high ranks, give them something to chew on for a couple of hours, maybe a few days at best to keep em coming back. They have nothing better to do, while low ranks have a bucket load to look forward to, it's about time they get something worth a sizable time/energy investment.

I can only wish it lasts months on end, call me pessimistic or short sighted but i just don't see it lasting that long (months). But it will make an interesting addition to the game nevertheless if/when it gets added. What would be nice eventually is new tech trees and a couple more ct-lab recipes, should renew high rankers faith in the game in the really short term.

Not saying this particular thing would be a months-long attraction, but it's a damn sight better than more lab tech or a longer research tree. As it is, many of the high ranks are little more than resource dumpers now. There needs to be something to DO to renew our faith.

An idea for helping the longevity of the idea's interest: Don't make the planet location a mission reward, make it's scan location a drop reward from a new npc, that only enters the bt spawn list after completion. Maybe have 1 spawn per mission completion and the rest be randoms...? Idk, pleasing the high rankers is tough to think about...

Just glanced over the first page - forgive me if this has been suggested. I like the NPC planets idea. here's my thoughts (ideas to be explained later highlighted in red):

To find the planets - normal scanning, mission chains, or NPC drops.
To take them - Normal invasion, guards to disable then invade, collaborative effort.
Extra "bonuses" - NPC resurgence, Extra effects, WAR!

NPC drops - Release new rare NPCs - some elite, some solo. These NPCs have a chance to drop something like co-ordiantes or scan data. Using X amount of these reveals a new planet. The more you use at once, the better planets you can find. However, these would also be more guarded. eg:

New NPC: Crimson Courier - solo ex rare. Can drop a toxic hyperpurifier (+2 mining on toxics, +3 on irradiated, max of 20X mega rich), OR contact co-ordinates.
Using co-ordinates reveals a random, standard planet. The minimum quality of the planet is:
1 coordinate: large and rich
2 coordiantes: very large and ex rich
3 coordiantes: massive and ultra rich

The revealed planet is controlled by the crimson blades. There are scaled stats - the better the planet, the more difficult it is to take.

Collaborative Effort - you can alert the planet to specific members of your legion. The planets will be of a far better quality and far more heavily defended. If one person succeeds the invasion, everybody who it was alerted to gets "control" of the planet. The person who succeeds the invasion is the governor, and is in charge of all structures on the planet. All production from the planet is shared evenly.
If the planet is invaded by an outside person, it becomes a standard planet again (1 owner).
If an owner leaves the legion, the person who leaves loses control of the planet, but not the scan.

NPC Resurgence - NPCs will try to retake the planet. The planet will take a random amount of damage every hour for 2 days. If you're guarding the planet, you will also take a random amount of damage (all damage is scaled). If the population drops to 0, NPCs regain control of the planet.

WAR! - the NPC faction can go to war with you in retaliation for taking one of their planets. You will ONLY see their ships on the NPC tab. You gain 3 scans of their (NPC) planets, and they are able to see 3 of yours (chosen at random). Their "invasions" will be similar to resurgence, and your ship will take random hourly damage at all times. The war is over after one of the following conditions are met:
*You lose 2 planets to the NPCs. One of these will be fluxed.
*You take two planets from the NPCs
*You get disabled X times
*You disable X NPC ships
*2 days pass

These are not all continuous ideas. They are all individual suggestions that could be used for NPC controlled planets.

maybe, the suggestion itself combine several ideas posted already by number of players... I saw similiraty with some of my comments etc. however we all have to take in consideration, that there may be similar suggestions..
the aim is, to talk about it, tweak/improve the suggestions until they got implemented... nothing else matters.
