i have noticed that when i inhabit a new research planet that the development bonus does not show up automatically. if i do not look at that planet every 24 hours after colonizing it the development bonus is not added to my hourly production.

Yeah, that's a known issue.

As FerrusManus has said, this is a known issue. After you colonise them, planets take 5 days in real-life to fully develop. This can be reduced with a Planet Time Vortex artifact however.

For every 24 hours that passes from the second you colonise the planet, it will gain +20% production. The game doesn't auto-update production stats though, so you have to remember to keep checking up on your planets. After the 5 days are up then your planet will become fully developed and stop gaining any further production bonuses. At that point, you don't need to continue checking up on it.

In some other circumstances, the game does update planet-related information though, such as the planet lists. This can occur for example when you use an artifact to permanently increase its' size, permanently increase its' output, or permanently change it into another class of planet. But the planet list can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours to update. When you visit the planet though, it will always be up to date. It's just the planet list that can be slow to update.

Dan knows of these issues and is working on it. He hasn't found a solution yet though or we wouldn't be discussing this.
