Way to be redundant.

Population is the hitpoints of the planet, and so helps protect it from invasion. It has no actual bearing on production.

the only protection it provides is a time buffer/energy drain deterrent, it doesnt matter if you have 100 or 1000 population when someone is invading. depending on ship strength vs planet defences, if youre online, you might get a couple minutes before they can invade.. if you're offline and they have enough energy, oh well, hope they dont succeed.
