I think gases used to be uncommon, probably due to their size potential.

Uncommon gases have sparse or less research, common have average plus research

asdfgr wrote: Uncommon gases have sparse or less research, common have average plus research I have nine gas planets with sparse research and they are all common. I checked a number based on both research and size and they are all common. thunderbolta may be correct that they were changed from uncommon to common.

Of all the gas planets in my list. none were uncommon. Think you may have misread the rarity on some of them.

I just counted mine: 59 Common, 5 Uncommon. No noticeable pattern to it though. One of em has a stealth screen, but that's it. Nothing special about the rest.

9 of 117 of my scanned gas planets were Uncommon. There appeared to be no correlation between them. Ranged from VS to EA, and L to VM.

Definitely seems to be the most plausible explanation.

When new planet images were introduced (can't remember when it was, maybe about a year ago?) a number of planets in my database were changed from "old" to "new" images. So I don't think it would be a carryover due to old images. Also the "old" images are still used, it's just now there are additional images (so instead of having, say, 3 variants on the theme of planet type there are now 6).

OH! I think I've got it. Thank you for giving me the idea to look at the pictures again. THESE ARE ALL JUPITERS! Does everybody see the "Big Red Spot"?

Sigh... Common, Uncommon, Rare, Mythical... They are all arbitrary styles made up by Dan giving a general idea of the total of that particular type of planet in relation to the total number of all planets in the galaxy. My personal guess is that when Dan added the fifth planet images he mistakenly entered Uncommon in the rarity column of the database generation and the Common purple gas planets (Gas5.png) are just other gas planets (Gas1.png-Gas2.png) that had their images changes to balance out the number with each image.
