I like this idea, but like what other have said you need to have it so it is worth it for a someone to not be loyal in a legion. So maybe something like 30% attack and defense and 10% hull or something?

Edit: If you use my idea, I just saw how it could be abused, so maybe change it to not in a legion?

I think that's a bit too much. I personally feel like +20% attack/defense would be fair; 15% I feel isn't enough (Aerlens gain +30% defense regardless of loyalty), and you're sacrificing loyalty. Thus it would be similar to having a Konqul with 2/3rds of the Aerlen racial bonus, but in return you wouldn't have loyalty (no base shipments, base killing, CTL, etc). Maybe even 25%, considering the trade-offs.

Base shipments aren't actually sacrificed. You do not have to be loyal to a legion to collect shipments, you just need to be a member for one day. This means that you'd miss one out of 7 shipments each week to avoid becoming completely loyal to your legion. Some legions don't have equal shipments every day of the week, which means in these legions you wouldn't miss /any/ shipments.

Yeah, that's what I meant. At the same time, you also wouldn't contribute to the base shipments (making them larger) and you also wouldn't be able to alert enemy owned planets, say, for sab help (unless you become loyal and then leave the legion after).

For higher ranks, rewards from killing bases can be significant as well. They would be nullifying any gain of Tri-Phase Cutters, Adumbrate Stations, Continuum Parsers (basically CTP for most of them), and Enumeration Crystals.

That's why I want to see Mercenaries have a major advantage for all their losses.

I completely understand all the things that they lose from not being loyal.

It's more of a for fun thing than anything. Some players are getting tremendously bored and want more things to do. Mercenary opens that door. Like I mentioned, if you for whatever reason want to get involved with a war outside your legion, Mercenaries would provide a buff when you aren't ever planning on really being loyal to them in the first place. It's more of a freelance profession where you don't need to be apart of a legion, and could definitely be a great chance to just have some lawless fun. Also, it'd be a good time to check out other legions and see what they're about. You never know, a player might find a legion they likes better than the one they're been getting fed up with just surfing around as a Merc.

-1....several reasons...

A. no more scan unless an item that benefits planetary cloaking is also introduced to maintain balance.

2. basically you gain a constant attack and defense buff that would phase out 2 other classes at the cost of base fights and base production(not only for you but your entire legion as player loyalty affects the production)

III. nothing about this race actually represents what a "mercenary" actually is... a hired gun someone who takes out bounties kills the target and then recieves compensation... just because a fat man at the mall wears a red suit and has a beard doesnt make him santa. Just because you call a profession a mercenary doesnt actually make it a mercenary.

who really would want someone in their legion who only benefits themselves? they deprive others in the legion of artifact production. they cant donate to help the growth of the legion. they cant alert planets or help scan bases........-_- minus one

Stryll

Stryll are well known as proficient hunters. Their ships possess some of the most advanced sensor equipment known and are capable of tracking down even the most elusive of targets. Because of this those of the Stryll race have a 20% increase to the standard spawn weight of Uncommon, Rare, and Extremely Rare NPCs. The Stryll are also the only race to be able to choose the Mercenary profession.

Available Professions: Explorer, Fixer, Hacker, Mercenary, Raider, Spy

Mercenary

Initial Races: None
Unlockable Races: Stryll
Passive Ability: Increases Attack and Defense by 20% each, but only when the ship is not loyal to a legion.

The Hunter

Medal Description: While a member of the Stryll race, disable 500 'Enemy Player' ships while you are not loyal to a legion.
Medal Type: PvP
Medal Points: 25
Medal Reward: Stryll Sights [Special Device - Size: 15, Scan: +50, Scan Bonus: +3%] Limit 1 per ship.

I like it .. +1 .. I would change the medal reward for the hunter .. as said by others .. too much scan .. I would keep it inline with the racial bonus and give an additional +5% bonus to the npc scanning (which the item could be carried over to non stryll races giving them a +5% bonus if they changed race) or a +% crit percent or something ..

You just said exactly why they're called mercenaries... a hired gun, takes bounties and kills targets, receives compensation. What's stopping legions from posting on the forums looking for mercenary players (that isn't to say they have to be a Stryll Mercenary to join them during wars for pay? They can care less if they're loyal or not if they're squishing their enemies. Wars are about having the upper-hand. What about a small legion continually being bullied by a particular legion, for example? If they have the pay they can have the guns and finally get the bullies off their back. Continual base disables and farming against said legion would definitely lead to them considering the cost of paying strong players before declaring a war.

I'll tell you right now, if I was being paid to go on a merciless killing spree, you'd bet I'd be there in a heartbeat.

I agree that for increased scan there should be increased cloaking benefits, and honestly I think Dan would consider that upon the release and probably find a way to incorporate it in the chain itself.

NPC specific scan bonus wouldn't be too bad of an idea either, and eliminates the need for any new cloaking content at the same time. Valid and considerable.

I feel like people just aren't seeing the bigger picture. How many high-rank players leading a small legion are forced to either wait out their boss elites or kill them alone? How strong are npc bosses really going to get? Either there needs to be cross-legion npc alerting (face it, not happening) or there could be some advantage to not being loyal. Between the NPC bonuses and the raw power Mercenary get from no being loyal, high-rank leaders can begin pooling in a third party legion for npc hunting purposes. This had been an ongoing problem for end game players that are not in a top ten legion, and simply something has to be done about it. Before you go assuming that it's a junky idea, consider just how many doors this opens to the future of the game.

This idea is both pvp and pve revolutionizing, so if you want to play a game that never changes or never improves and slowly loses fan base and players more and more until it dies, be my guest. I'm on the other hand am going to keep being creative so Dan isn't doing this game all by himself to ensure us a game even better than we know it now in the future.

Who is the raider? Is it me? I happen to have the maximum possible raiding bonus right now. With three armories, systematic avarice from the ust, and a raider profession, I have a total raiding bonus of 91%. Now that's a raider, if there ever was one.
