About the turrets, maybe you could make it so that they remove the benefit of 1 or more crew members( based on Mk) to lower the enemy's shield limit or add extra damage.

i like the shield idea, and i was wondering why it wasn't this way already.

for the idea to alter the damage type... i have in idea to add a new group of modules you get for free after completing 1/3 of phase tier that allows you to send partial damage to bypass the shields, but at a huge loss. the hull would take 25% , and the shield would take 50%, the rest is lost energy. when the shields are 0, they will do 75% to hull. the module to enable this effect should be about 10 ship space.

i dont like the crew quarters idea if it adds any benefit to stat however inefficient. im against anything that further lessens the value of crew stats. the game needs more balancing in favor of stats( like a huge buff to raiding options). players are already not adding crew anymore as it is now. IF we gave them some incentive to then the game would be even more dynamic. to be realistic, you cant just fire/hire crew by just installing a module. hiring crew should be permanent.

I wanted to BUMP because I really like that shield idea and Hunter, if your saying a module that makes weapons bypass the shields by 25% extra but at a loss of 25% damage, I like it. A suggestion on a name: Chroniton Flux Emmiter(from star trek[you used tachyon so I would think chroniton wouldnt be copyrighted]: it is a particle that phases in and out of this dimension and there is a weapon called chroniton flux torpedo and flux fits perfectly with this game)

Gauss Weaponry = Bypass through shield
Energy Weaponry = Just do lots of damage

comparing them to cars, a rail gun is a sportscar, a mass driver is a pickup truck, and a Gauss cannon is a semi. (I would think)

They are just diferent names for the same thhing, a big gun that uses magnets to propel a iron mass(Thus the name Mass Driver). they require large amounts of electricity and it has something to do with the scientific principle gauss discovered(Thus the name Gauss Cannon), I dont know where name rail gun came from, maybe the iron mass moves along a rail. But you can call any giant electromagnetic gun a rail gun, mass driver, or gauss cannon. search for rail gun on bing images to find a picture of a giant navy artillery gun that can be called a rail gun(it uses electromagnetism to propel a iron mass)
